  4. I don't believe that "game" or "gameness" per se is a trait that is exclusive to the APBT nor is it relegated to the pit. You can see the difference between a game dog and a cur in a hunt, and to some extent, protection work. The fact of the matter is that fighting dogs is illegal and if you want to keep that trait in the dogs being bred, they need to be tested in a way that won't get you sent to jail. Also, fighting may be the most notorious of the uses these dogs were put to, but they were and are working dogs to a large extent outside of any box.

What????? This is what I am talking about. A true game dog it is not manageble. Game dog knows nothing else. That is what I am talking about in the original post. The American Pitbull Terrier is not for everybody

You're a moderator right Smokin Hemi....tel me how to thank youu twice for this ^^^

  7. You can "manage" it to some extent with intense training, but if a dog has the fire then it will always be there. The only true deterent is prevention/avoidance. Not all game dogs are immediately DA right off the bat when around other dogs. I've seen some who were calm around other dogs so long as they weren't challenged. Sometimes the confidence of a game dog keeps it from seeing other dogs as a threat or potential challenger initially. But I assure you that even the calmest, least DA game dog will get after it as soon as it does feel threatened or challenged, regardless of whatever training it may have.

Guambodian your a fool about the gameness statement if you believe that... That's all I have to say about that...

Now It may be illegal in America (right now) but in a lot of places in the world it is not... It is possible to 'import' a real deal true and proven Game Dog and it be perfectly legal...

And Hemi dude I love ya man but man dude the Name is "American (pit) BULLTERRIER"

    Not "pitbull (terrier)"

Sorry just a lil pet peave of mine... Not a big deal...

DA from a game dog can be managed threw training as long as the individual has never been in a physical altercation with another dog. The training still needs to be strict, but it can be done. 90% of most game dogs are highly manageable, if they weren't they would've never been used for their original purpose. If a person were to get bit in the pit, you lose automatically, so in that case, they have to be manageable. Your average game dog is not out of control as one may think, they are methodical, smart, and fast thinkers. They no if they see a dog walking down the street to take a dominant stance and maybe pull alittle, but it will not act the same as if it sees a []. They know the difference between the two. A game dog is usually an outstanding all purpose dog, it just so happens that the dog is also good at what it was originally bred, it doesn't make the dog any less of of great companion.IMHO

  10. I've seen game, maybe more than most who would post here because of where I grew up. Let's just say the bleeding hearts don't have a grip there yet. Is the rooster who keeps fighting after taking a knife in the chest not showing gameness? Is game not a factor when a dog gets roughed up by a boar but keeps it's hold long enough for it's master to fell it? Do you people really believe that only APBTs have gameness and that it only manifests itself in the pit? That seems foolish to me.

One thing I've noticed with peoples points, its the legality issue. "We all love game bred dogs, but you cant game test because its illegal so next best thing.. etc"

Now I for one live in a country where BSL is rife, and i support it. Reason being, it keeps the dogs out of the "Publics" hands to an extent, at least minimises it. "Those that know, know where they are - usually in the yard lol) and life goes on..
I'm sure I will get bashed for this view, as i have in the past, but it is a conclusion i have come to, as we all know the current society we live in.

I totally agree with a few points being put forward, and those looking to "change" the breed, and what it can "Become" not what it alrerady is.
Why were you attracted to the breed? When you researched the breed and found out the varying "Lines" and i use that term loosely, why did you end up on the APBT?

Why not the American Staff? Why not the Staff?

If your answer is for that undying courage, spirit, devotion, loyalty, then why on earth would you want to change ANYTHING at all in the "Recipe"??

May I ask the good people here, Hells Bells in particular, What are your thought on the Breeding, Schooling, Matching, and game testing of APBT's in Countrys where it is NOT frowned upon?

    Cheers, QWERT

A concern of mine is what if we are successful and AB, AST are no longer considered APBT. It seems to me that it would make bsl easier to single out our great breed. Since it is no longer grouped with show dogs, humaniacs would push extra hard to eradicate our great breed with the argument "they are only bred for one purpose" given more credance with the fact the "pitbull types" have been reclassified as something else.

While it is a fine line you make a very valid point on those examples, and I don't have so much pride that I can't admit that your right, to some degree...

Roosters yes they are Game to the core but I believe that in the canines the ApBT is the ONLY breed that is truly game by def. that I know..... Including Patterdales, Tosa's, and all other combat and hunting breeds...

YES, I have seen GAME bulldogs display GAMENESS on a wild boar hunt... But if that dog were in a sit in the [] I think the def. Would also apply there as well... You CAN take a GAME [] dog OUT of the [] and it be just as game displaying the same traits as he would inside but NOOTHER breed of dog is as GAME as the American Game Dog The REAL AMERICAN pit BULL TERRIER

I disagree about protection work, weight pull and any other activity that one might think a dog is displaying 'gameness' that fog MIGHT be game but such things do not test a dogs gameness....

Its a play on words and a deep understanding is needed to understand which I think you do have... Maybe we just say the same thing with a different accent...

PP19, why try and "manage" the DA when the best way to manage it is avoidance. And smokin hemi,I think your about two pages late ^..lol

  17. I wanted a medium sized dog, that was very intillegent, that would love to go fishing with me, that could hold his/her own if during these outdoors adventures a coyote(s) were to happen upon us or any other wild animal. I needed a companion to jog with me, that could protect me from these stray dogs and maybe scare away stray humans, I knew that she would never be under my full control because where she came from, domesticated, but still having trace instincts of her wild ancestors, maybe even trace elements of gameness of a bloodsport her long ago relatives participated in. It doesn't even have to be the APBT.. any medium sized dog with heart and courage would do.... just the APBt tends to have more of these traits than other dogs of this size range. And if I can't have a bad to the bone gamebred dog, I might as well have one that looks like one and comes from one somewhere in the past. I just wanted a companion of the 4 legged kind. Was considering a Belgian Malinois, but they're too furry.

In countries where it is legal to match.. people can do what they want with their dogs. Same with birds, horses, elephants. I understand the passion of dogmen. When it was legal, I was very into gamebirds of the naked heel. Seems ever since bird matching became illegal; the quality of r birds has deterierated over the years. You have people crossing blood, switch bloodlines completely; instead of working on their current bloodline and improving it.. there is less of a "drive" to prove your birds are the stuff, instead it's about getting lucky with a cross or new blood. Then you get all these man fighters and untalented mongrels that should be called ornamental birds. Seems that way with dogs a little too, mainly the true APBT.

  18. ^ I hear that. BSL scares me. I heard that the ABKC (bully kennel club) was offering free registration in Feb. I contemplated getting my bitch registered as an "American Bully" on the side to hide her from the BSL monster. In the end I didn't because I felt it would be an insult to her and her ancestors. Plus, I couldn't reconcile myself with the idea of hiding/ backing down. I guess I'll have to tell the HOA she's a lab/terrier mix if it comes down to it.

  20. I agree man, I really do. I think protection work can be good for finding curs but you're right about using it to prove game (gameness is a good trait for a protection dog though). You're also right about our language and accents. I bring up these examples because I want to find some way to preserve the gameness in our dogs without getting sent to jail. Right now the Russian Bolio stuff is hot on Guam (ABLIZIN), and I think it's a shame that the APBT is becoming like the GSD and others in that you have to import a good working dog.
