And what temperment are you talking about breeding them for. Any breeder who truely loves this breed is not breeding Man-biters,They are doing what they should do with those dogs so they dont have a chance to bite or pass on those traits. so breeding for temperment is already being done. If you breed out the DA,you will surely have a different breed of dog that should not be called a APBT:p

i will NEVER discourage the drive my dog has or shows me.

    NEVER.

and if you have an aPITbt or aPETbt, you shouldn't either.

be the responsible owner and don't put them or yourself in a situation you can't handle.

I think some of you are not clear on certian points. DA is not the same as "gameness".
There are natural orders in the dog(ALL DOG) world, and aggression is there.
Pre-1976, that fact was shown and proved in a show. Aggressive dogs may have what Hells Bells called "go", but thats not game. Any dog can be capable of confronting and attacking another dog.
Truly game APBT would not stop in this effort, regardless of the amount of punishment and damage it suffered.
It can be called cruel and what not, but a dog with both front legs chewd like bubble gum that pushes itself, crippled, across that line towards the other dog, that is game. Not giving up for anyting , including pain or impending death.

Now, in this new century, this is not legal of course. But that is the trait that was bred into the APBT, and thats just fact.

Owning APBTs is a commitment, as with any dog, but even moreso.
If you do not know what you are getting into, then dont own these dogs.

Some breeds are bred for working traits, like herding, sled dogging, good noses, etc.
Anyone who has been around sled dogs will tell you that you have to stay on top of these strong determined animals, or a nasty dogfight can hurt or kill several dogs.
Those dogs are moreso bred for their abilities, and the ability to work in a pack is crucial.

i have always felt that the APBT required a serious owner and handler, simply because the traits that were bred into them were gameness and lack of HA, not pack behaviours. Pitbulls are very loyal pack animals towards their owners, but those pack instincts fail them when it comes to other dogs. Not all of course, as not all game bred APBT are game. 1 out of 10 in a litter is a good number, IMHO.
This is the reality of the breed many of us LOVE.

The APBT, in its historical form, will never die, there are too many places that are under the radar that are breeding true to type bulldogs, and will continue to do so.

My two cents, though you didn't ask for it (or did you;)):
I think the most important thing that fanciers seem to forget here is that there is no reason to be at each other's throats and there are ways to explain yourself and provide information without always sounding like a donkey, and that we need need to be a united front at this time. These dogs are under fire. BSL doesn't care whether or not you have a petbull or a gamebred. It does not care if it's a bully, staffie, APBT or whatever else they're calling a Pit Bull these days. It does not care wether or not your dog is a cur or the rankest hottest gamest mofo this side of Denver. It didn't care about those things before, and it certainly won't care about those things when it's dragging your dogs out of your yard via catchpole, taking them down to the local shelter, and gassing them. So by all means keep your preferences and your love of your dogs (it's what makes you), but please remember that if BSL comes to your state or town and all you did was gripe about what was or what wasn't a real bulldog during that time, and you find your yard dogless later, you are partly at fault because you need to remember:

    BSL doesn't care

Mr.B...I think i was the only member other than hells bells talking about DA on this thread,so i will address you. I wasnt comparing DA to game. I was just stating that Game comes with DA. You cant get game without DA. Now granted some dogs showed no form of DA outside of the [] but if they showed none at all (inside the []) then they would've jumped the wall... I was just trying to explain that when you start to breed the DA out of the dogs you will get another breed eventually. If you werent referring to me, I appologize, I just dont want you to misunderstand what I was posting.

No, I didnt misunderstand you, I was referring to Hells Bells, and to others in general, I was not assuming anything about anyone personally.
She mentioned that a dog tried to "go" at hers, and I felt that she had an incorrect view of what the term " game" means, and its relation to DA.

A rough cur can have tons of DA.

I agree with clkennels, he couldn't have said it any better. I am in love with the breed for what it is, not what it can become. I will always own a game dog, bred to the original standard. All this talk about pets is bull, if you don't know the pedigree, then you don't have an apbt. You have a pitbull looking dog, and you don't know anything about where it comes from, it's a mutt. People need to be educated, and guided in the right direction, a Staffordshire terrier is a cousin to the apbt, similar ancestry but bred for a different purpose. A bully is a cross bred dog that has become it's own seperate breed, which why they have their own seperate standards. A game dog is the original version, the most loyal version, the dominant version, and the better and most driven version. Why would anyone want less than the best...

If I want a gamebred dog im not going to try and breed the DA out of it. Just like If I want a super small APBT, I'm not just gonna breed smallest to smallest just to get what i want..I might as well get the next best thing and get a patterdale.

  12. imho people don't own a game bred dog if his sire/dam didn't prove it was game. people don't own a gamedog unless they participate in illegal activities, at yours and your own dogs risk. i have nothing against using an animal for what it was bred to do. we slaughter millions of cows each year so we can have hamburgers and steaks.. they were bred to have a lot of meat. slaughtering cows is just a luxury to us when we can get by just eating worms and bananas.

i own a BYB petbull but she's the best dog i've ever had. i don't care about pedigrees or bloodlines, she just had to prove to me she would be a good companion, because i was not willing or about to use her for any illegal activities.

in the future, I would love to own a game-bred dog, because this is a free country, and I should be able to achieve and have most anything i put my mind to, but I don't see that happening because my dog is a handfull already.

As an individual, i got a lot of poop from people about buying from a BYB, but I see it no different than buying from a kennel, and I sure as heck have no way of getting close to a real dogman to get a pup since i'm not a very social person. I don't plan to breed her, I don't plan to show her as more than anything she is... a dog with special needs. People that own pitbulls or petbulls just need to realize that their dogs have special needs that need to be addressed because accidents happen every day in life.

i've learned a lot from this website, but i'm no expert on any of this.. just giving my opinion.

now.. with chickens.. i would need some stags from a proven cock.

PP. thats the problem. to many people want gamedogs & were not mentor on what it takes to keep them. anyone with a grand can go online and get one shipped to there door. thats the real problem . it use to be a fraternity members only.

So you own game bred dogs?

You don't have to own an Ambully. Show breeders in UKC and ADBA can continue to breed and I think they both offer pretty good looking dogs. The show and the working version.

And I say DA is a trait that can occur in any pet bull, game dog, shelter dog, mix dog that is an especially point fact in APBT history and can not be forgotten. But is manageable in training.

It is not manageable in training..Its manageable in avoidance of situations. the next best thing is if you just have an ice cold dog that never turns on...
