Game ABPT's and APBT's

I think there is a big misconception on the difference between a game dog and a non game dog. I here the people on the internet talk about how well they shouldnt be tethered or you shouldnt have whats needed to protect your dog from other animals and other animals from your dog. I think that there is alot of misinformation about the breed. The different types of dogs out there i.e. APBT's, AB, AST, etc.. There is a difference in all of these dogs where it be temperment, size, shape, color what type of situations the dog could be in and not. People who ramble off at the mouth especially on Youtube and these anti APBT websites dont even have a clue of what they are talking about. Now IMHO a true game APBT is not for everyone. Thats why I dont have a big problem with this new crop of dogs coming up today. (As long as they are labeled right AB) Well I'm not going to lie I dont like the short fat ones. But to make my point Most are walking around thinking a RB/Jacko dog is the same as a RE/Gotti or a Boyles/ Eli is the same as a Camelot Larsan dog. The lack of education people get before getting into these dogs are as big of a factor in the extinction of this breed as HSUS, AC, ASPCA, BYB and anyone else you want to blame.Would like to here your thoughts.

Misconceptions are everywhere about gamebreds and even APBTs in general, especially when it comes to things like containment. Had a lady come to my store looking for something to separate her dogs during the summer. I suggested tying them out and crating and rotating in the house, and she looked at me like I suggested she throw the dogs in the woodchipper. I also had a guy with a pup he bought that said his dog was small at 6 months old with a pup that he swore was Redboy (I have my doubts) and I told him the dog was where it was supposed to be in size, and that most of them don't go over 80 pounds. He looked at me like I was crazy. I just think people need to exhaust every avenue of knowledge they have before they go "Awwww, lookit the puppy!" and buy one, spelling trouble for the breed in the end.

Misconception is a big part of what we are trying to overcome. This breed, and all "pit bull type" dogs are being demonized everyday and mostly it's all hearsay and misconception.

Then you have these idiots who own them and don't even know what they have. I have met countless people who say they have a purebred "pitbull" and then I say oh I have APBT's too and they say "not the terrier mixed ones the pure ones."

These are the idiots that aren't doing the breed any favors.

This is a great post because you see it even with some of the newer members here on GD. They do not understand difference between a Pet bull and a true bulldog. One thing we cannot forget is APBT's are APBT's even if you do formal training. Never trust a bulldog not to fight, don't get into the idea you can treat them like your typical pet dog. I think that's when people get into trouble with this breed. We have seen a number of posts where the situation has gotten out of control with these dogs and they do not know how to cope with the situation. That's when those people should take a long look at themselves and see if they really should own the breed. They are not for everyone!

While I agree that The American GAME DOG is a different breed altogether than what the PUBLIC calls a 'pit bull'.. But when neg. Press is out there we all suffer.. HOWEVER like it or not bullie and show dog ppl can do things say things talk to people were we game dog ppl CAN'T...! While idiots are always harmful and there and just as many IF NOT MORE idiots in game dogs then bullies I really don't care what ppl call their dog. Or what they call my dog... IF THEY want to know PPL will SEEK info...it doesn't bother me what so ever that people call what they have a 'pit bull' what I CAN'T STAND is ppl that breed pets for PURE profit and that goes for GAME DOG breedings as well... I can't stand ppl that DON'T CULL or have a high standard with WHO they place their dogs with.... While there are tons of dbl standards and contradictions even with me and how I feel about things the fact remains that bullies don't effect how my dog hunts or how my dogs are bred.... HELL in one way I am glad that ppl breed watered down dogs for a reason... They are better to beat on the weight pull track... If ppl WANT to know... THEY WILL seek knowledge.....

I agree Bobby but I am talking about just in the pitbull community. I think we are in trouble if the PBC dont know what they have in there back yard. They dont do any research about there dog. They have no idea of what bloodine there dogs are. The imortantance of that is you can have some idea of what traits to look for as your dog gets older. You still have people who let there dogs run around in dog parks.lol. Which blows my mind why anyone would do that. Then they wonder why lil poocchy just went Gr. CH. Zebo on everything in the park. It is hard to stand up for the breed when there is so many people that have no idea what they have.

I don't see anything wrong with DA in our breed. For one,I don't trust stray dogs so if a loose dog comes running towards me I drop my dogs leash. I won't turn my back to a strange man running to me and I sure as hell won't turn my back on a stray dog running towards me. What these dogs were bred for has been illegal now for over thirty years. But you do not have a game dog because he won't give up at weightpull, schutzhound,or any other event. If people continue to breed for show champions the breed will DIE out and should not be called the APBT anymore. Buy dogs and enter them into those events and when you want another do it all over again. Because of the laws here, pretty soon the only real APBT's are gonna be in those countries where it is still legal to match. If people continue to breed for ukc/adba events this breed will turn into the American Weight Pull Terrier. My whole point is as long as your a law abiding citizen don't breed.

I posted this in another thread. I think what i wrote in red applies to this thread better. In the area that I live in It is insane for me to think I have a pure bred APBT under 90+lbs. And everyone knows that their monsters are GAME because the bloodline is always Colby/Gotti.

I am the first to admit that the current dog I have may not be a pure PB I paid $ 150 met the guy in a parking lot game breeding ( NOT ) 7 months and 70 to 75 pounds tells me he is to big to be a true PB also I see his feet have a webbing like a water dog but he looks like a pit and for sure he does not back down from Battle and or stop. He is not DA but he can absolutely hurt a animal with all the legal BSL repercussions that go with it
I had a white dog recently of unknown ancestry and his hair on his back was a little wavy but he also looked like a PB, this dog was DA and wild I am serious .
My dogs of my past which one had papers at least and one seemed more SBT like I found better with people and I had zero worry about HA the dog on dog potential thats a given.
The reason I mention all this is we are all in this together and wile you may wish PB mixes or non game breeding type dogs and the newer large ones would stop getting into the mix of true Game Breeding APBTs The fact is all these dogs are the same to the public and can get into a unintended accidental
situations with same results as a true Game Dog maybe even worse . You know whats worse then a Wolf or a Coyote, a Wolf / Coyote Dog mix, the power of a Wolf or Coyote and no fear of humans .
The same I feel is for the PB mixes years of PB breeding for athletic power and gameness and NON HUMAN aggression ruined when mixed with dogs that HA is not looked down upon so much
All in All any one with a dog with Pit blood needs to be educated of the responsibility of said dogs

Nice to have a Ferrari, looks nice is full of power, some times a car does not look like a Ferrari but it's got the same engine and both get tickets for driving to fast

I think if you want to see this breed continue as it is with all of it's traits true... and not have to be game-tested. Let them prove their determination and drive in the sports that are legal. Like it or not people, dog fighting is illegal. I like reading old stories about the dogs just as much as the next person. But I'll never fight a dog, nor have the desire to do so. And many pit bulls in history such as Petey was a 30's pit bull must have been pretty close to what the breed started as. I don't recall any stories of him being game tested, but we all claim him when we are defending the good history of the breed. Does that make him a pet bull? See this term is really bothering me. It used to not but on this site it's like a derogatory statement... and just because my dog is not game (who knows shes never been in a scrap) doesn't make her less a good dog or less a pit bull. I might not have a pedigree to base her traits off of, but I have the pleasure of visiting some of her doggy family anytime I want. Sad thing is I took the time to socialize and train my dog, which her parents were not nor her grandparents. When I take my dog out in public I want people to say "wow look at how well behaved that pit bull is" not "omg look at that wild pit bull ready to break it's leash and eat my baby!" Ofcourse I'm sure these thoughts are going through peoples minds about my dog as well. But, we normally can't step out of the house with atleast a few people stopping to pet Helena and tell me what a nice dog she is.

Thats MY work. Good dogs don't make themselves. She had it right on temperament, and I have control. Yes I have a pet and she is a dog and she is a pit bull. She's not big and blue either. She's a standard size dog just like all your fancy game bred dogs with fancy peds. Whats that ped of game dogs worth, when your dog can't legally do what it was bred for?

And I'd want nothing to do with a person who sold pups for illegal purposes. Good don't let me have a dog because I'll go find one somewhere else that health tests and titles and their dogs are worth more than what the paper says.

I don't think the term "pet bull" is demeaning in any way. There is a difference between working bred dog and a "pet". You wouldn't understand until you owned a true working bred dog.

All my dogs are pet bred. They probably don't have a working dog in their ancestry for generations. But they have drive and willingness to work. Especially my JRT mix. If this mix is like this, I couldn't imagine a working bred JRT!!! I'm willing to bet she's pretty close to their drive. Little freak....

So your dogs are pet bred and your telling ME that I can't handle a real bulldog... or that you let your bulldogs be bulldogs and pull on their leashes like wild banshees and lunge at every bird or bunny or dog?

Obviously we don't know much about each other.

    1. If you do not know the ancestry of your dog you can not say it is an APBT. Screw a ukc/adba ped,but if the breeder couldnt even give you a handwritten ped, You do not know that dogs history and Should Not call it an APBT.

    2. If breeders are going to breed for these commercial events they will have to stop calling those dogs APBT because that name came from the sport they were bred for.

    3.
This breed is not going to continue with its "true traits" if its being bred for something new. If its being bred for a different cause then it will be a DIFFERENT breed. Like I said i dont have a problem with those events,Just dont breed for them. Thats why theres so many damn kennels now.Buy a pup enter it in events and buy another one and repeat the process.Just dont breed unless you are infact wanting to start another breed. Because everytime you breed these dogs disregarding their " TRUE TRAITS" thats what your doing, Starting a new breed.

P.S. I would never break the law so I hope it doesnt sound like im condoning present day pre-1976 activities...

I haven't told you anything. I was just saying what I would do in your situation and work up to a "game bred" bulldog. I didn't say I let my bulldogs pull on leashes because I don't even own APBTs. Or any bully breeds for that matter. How should I know if you could handle a bulldog? I don't know you. I just thought for the stuff you wanted to do (obedience, weight pull, agility) that a more docile and "watered down" dog would be better to start with. It's not like your getting a dog for a few years anyway, I think everyone is tryin to say that these dogs aren't like other dogs....

These dogs are a handful. My uncle has been breeding these dogs since i was born.. He's a heroin addict so i was never able to learn much from him on the history of these dogs. Thats why I'm here. All I know is the family of dogs he has bred and not much more.Everything I know has been from dealing with these dogs since i was a child. I'm 21 now,so you know i have alot more learning to do. Up until recently i was trying to learn these dogs the same way you are and it doesnt work like that... and people will be quick to tell you.
When one of my dogs was 8 months old i bought her in the house to play with my niece. I heard a slight growl and by the time i turned around she was charging at a $300 full lenght mirror my girl had just bought, trying to bite the "other dog"..She lost a tooth...When my GF got home she asked me how the mirror broke and i told her i fell into it..lol.. And she told me it was a $300 mirror... All i could say was "why would you spend $300 on a mirror"...
Just take your time and dont go to any dog shows expecting to learn about the dog you say you want to buy...

You breed them for temperament and certain traits, even the english bulldog at my dog training club went at Helena while we were walking by it. Even that little stumpy bulldog had some go in him no matter how distorted he was. He was still a bulldog and went after another dog. You may still be able to have the toughest dog on the block because it's in their heart.

Your proving my point for me. After so many generations of breeding for something else other than what this dog was initially bred for, you end up with a different breed. I personally dont want that breed.I dont want a shell of the dog i love, i want that dog. thats the reason i dont own a AmBully.
