I always flirt after a good 30 min or more handwalk...this assures me my dog is empty and warmed-up. Never had one get hurt from it but I have always been told too not let the dog jump! I keep the flirt low to the ground and go back and forth and in figure 8s...if your reaction time and handle of the pole is good you can get good work out (wind sprints) out of your dog by just keeping the bait inches away from your dogs mouth. Don't flirt on hard surfaces...this is very important to protect your dogs joints and pads!

lol I dont think some people realize how hard it can be to keep a flirt from certain dogs. And yes I have been nailed a few times, not fun!!

I have gotten ran over multiple times as well haha. Also got nipped on accident when trying to get the hide from my boy. I think alot of injuries from using the flirt pole happen when people take a dog that has not been worked at all. Is fat and out of shape and work them on it. Also I always make sure and hand walk my dog before and after any and all work outs, and give a good rub down. Alot of people are too lazy or find it unnecessary to hand walk, or rub down their dogs after hard work, and I feel both are important for multiple reasons. I recently built a flirt pole with bungee cord on the end instead of rope, and allow my dog to catch it more often and play tug with the hide. Its really a good idea especially if you have a dog like mine who isn't interested in the spring pole whatsoever. With my new flirt pole I can use it as a flirt pole and spring pole which keeps the dogs really interested because they know they get to catch it! The only downside I see to the way I built my flirt pole is the weight. I used one inch pvc to make sure it could withstand the tugging so it is a bit heavy and sometimes hard to keep away from the dog without making them jump.

I don't like the flirt pole, seems like a waste of time and money to make as well. I just use my hands and get my dog jumping and tug of war then i throw it for fetch. No running circles, i can control how high and long he jumps and hey i geta work out too. Holding up a dog for 30 min to an hour is a good workout haha I've also got to the point where ill just tell banks hops and hell jump as high as he can just cuz i say haha. And everynow and then i just let him have it and run around with it for a min just so he knows hes not running or jumping for that thing for no reason haha

just a horse lunge line/whip from TSC. work great, long range, and very flexible. it has held up very well for almost 2 years now.

oh, and the flip flop was for size reference, lol

here's a close-up of how i attach the rope/hide to the pole. i find using the c-clamp makes it easier and quicker to change out hides.

ElJay, would you not be worried about your dog biting the metal?

  9. ElJay

    ElJay CH Dog

no, there's plenty of space between the metal part and the hide. and he only ever bites the hide. or his own tongue, lip, etc, lol.

I had a 20oz bottle in my cargo pocket the other day and got clipped by my dog while using the flirt pole. The bottle blew up in my pocket and now I have a bruise so yeah it sucks getting hit but the dog has a ton of fun and gets a great work out. Lesson learned, no pop bottles in cargo pockets while using flirt pole anymore lol.

Do I even need to say the reason? Go read the post above yours then go and re-read what everyone else is saying about the accidents that can happen with flirt pole work.

Someone please give this person the Award for having no commen sense lol. I will let Eljaybee explain it to you lol.

    ElJay CH Dog

lmao, i dunno if anything is worth explaining to this cat. but seriously bukskin, if you're worried about a quarter-sized piece of metal near the end of a flirtpole cracking you in the head, then you need to learn to use one better, lol. but that's fine, if ya wanna let a little girl like me show ya up..... no prob.

  18. bukskin.banks

    bukskin.banks Big Dog

it's perfrect for a lil girl like you. u prob couldn't hold ur dog off the ground for more than 30 seconds. It's def a chick tool or for someone lazy that dont wana do it themself. Stand there a make ur dog run circles, sounds like a blast lol.

How old are you bukskin.banks ?

  20. ElJay

    ElJay CH Dog

yeah im terribly sorry that my little 112-pound ass isn't strong enough to hold my dog off the ground for 30 minutes like you. i'd rather let my dog do real workouts under his own power instead of just hang around off me. and fyi, running circles isn't all we do. and lighten up man! quit chewin nails so much... it's bad for your teeth :D
