anyone ever made of used something similar for water conditioning, and does water conditioning work, well enough with walking and Slatmill to justify building one? if one had the space?

I don't think you'd need something that big for your dog. I have seen large sized horse troughs one can buy at a co-op that could be used as a swim tank.

As for conditioning IDK what is better than another. I think each has it's pros & cons & each has a different place in a program. However, I have heard nothing but good things about swimming.

I once had a gyp who loved to play fetch. In the hot summer time when it was too warm to do anything else I'd take her out to the river & toss the balls in the river for her to swim out & fetch them & swim back to me & she looked quite fit & trim. Plus, she appreciated being able to cool off in the river! ;)

    Blessings ...

i don't condition without water work for me it works real good. i just use pools though set the dog up in the deep end & relax in the other. i do think the conditioning would be different in my area because the heat & humidity is really bad. in your area i don't see a need for water work because you ain't about to swim no dog in 20- temperatures at high altitude are ya? JK buck just remember it is real easy to over work your dog in water.

This is a very good point. I know I didn't have to work my gyp long in the river before she was tuckered out. I'd usually have to cut her workout by half when she was in the water. I have found an hour running about usually equals a half an hour in the water, at least with my dogs anyway.

    Blessings ...

    Thanks AGK, and BEN!!;)

it going to get hot, the new place has paved yard, so a swim tanks going to be used i think, and it's easier than digging out a pond, for the dogs..

and have read about lots that used to use swimming in keeps, but its not something I've done in a keep ever..more for recreation with the dogs than anything, but you do see improvements in there movements and endurance!thought it would be a good work out after a lil mill work too!?

Water work outs are great due to the lack of stress on the joints while working out in it, plus most dogs I've had loved the water which in turns makes conditioning easier to do....

I knew a place that raised horses and they had a swim pool inside for therapy. I used it for several dogs and it worked great.I never used it more then 30 minutes.

Thanks for the tips everyone! you think if you put a dog vest on it would work the same ?
like his one, as long as it had minimal under strapping??so theres no chafing in the underarms like harnesses sometimes do:confused:

Check out the vests made by Premier. They are mesh under the body and Jaeger has no problem dock diving in it.

never used a flotation device...have used a 20 feet piece of conduit, a snap hook and a jon-boat...also seen a guy weld two horse troughs together....i think they were about $80 bucks a piece....worked very well....swimming in the winter works wonders but their sleeping quarters must be inside/warm.....summer time swimming is an awesome way to condition and beat the heat...US1

I have some swim tanks plans
    use 12ga mild steel that is 48" x 120" and brake it in to "U" shape that is 32 x 48 x 40
    Then from a piece of 12ga steel that is 48" x 96" shear and brake two pieces that are 32" x 40 " with 2" lips .
add water hose fitting for easy drain and fill and head and tail slide bar to hold dog .

IMO i think water work is one of the best overall excercises, it also doesnt put strain on the bones. very good cardio workout.

i also swim my dog in the pool on a regular basis, but in all honesty i found it a lot better to take them to a river and have them swim against a current for the resistance, or if you have a stream/ravine near by where the water goes atleast to his chest & have em run AGAINST the current.
worked really well for my dog!

but for overall fun & excercise im sure a pool will be just fine.
