Boy have I been in the dark, never heard of this method although I can see it now...yet another example of how DNA can serve its purpose.

Is it expensive? I can see it being beneficial if you DNA your base stock and test the future pups for preservation breedings as you said.

The livestock industry is heavily reliant on DNA profiling. Stud animals are profiled to provide information on important traits such as growth rates, calving size etc to determine their appropriateness for an individual's breeding program. This info is presented as an EBV (estimated breeding value) which lists ratings for traits so you can make comparisons between bulls/rams/stallions etc. Since the domestic dog genome has been fully sequenced I don't see any reason why this can't be adopted in the future, especially for important and valuable stud stock. I should add that when I say 'stud' I'm referring to any animal used primarily for breeding

The diff is game dogs r bred primarly to do something illegal. So even an innocent breeder can be implicated in crimes he or she didnt commit Simply because a pup that was used illegally is traced back to their stud . i can see the dangers and the benefits but like slim said to each his own
