Who is the victor can go either way depending on the quality of the dog. A good Akita can beat a poor to mediocre bulldog & a good bulldog can beat a poor to mediocre Akita. (Or Tosa or Kangal - whatever, insert breed here). There are several breeds were bred to fight & as much as folks hate to hear it the APBT doesn't have a monopoly on winning, sorry to burst some folks' bubbles, but it all depends on the quality of dogs in that particular fight.

As for why folks of other breeds seem to have the desire to "prove" their breeds against a pit bull, for the most part it's the APBT owner's fault. Some folks go about beating their chests in threads like this (& also in public - horrors!) & bragging. Yeah, our dogs are fabulous animals & probably tops lb for lb & probably the most game BUT we shouldn't have a need to broadcast it to the world. The dogs do the talking & the blowhards out there only encourage numbskulls of EITHER breed to enter the "proving ground."

But bottom line? APBT vs. Akita (or any other breed) in a certain fight? Depends on the dogs. You can't forecast a winner. APBT vs. Akita (or any other breed) overall? My pick would be APBT.

As for bite force, from what was taught it has more to do with muzzle size & length than head size. The National Geographic bite force test some referred to previously found the Rottweiler has the hardest bite at 328 lb PSI. The German Shepherd was second with 238 lbs. The APBT came in last at 235 lbs.

Stunningly the average domestic dog came in at a whopping 320 lbs PSI, just 8 pts shy of the Rottweiler & beating out not only GSDs & APBTs but wild dogs (310 lbs) as well! This means your neighbor's Standard poodle or Lab is more dangerous than a GSD, APBT or even a wild dog!

i second the muscle size creates the Maximum bite potential with the variable being wether the animal feels a maximum force is required. let's not forget, the bull was bred Not to bite the man's arm and i gotta think this influences the dog even when it is ordered to bite. incidentally, some of the other mentioned dogs were bred TO bite the arm.

Scientists examine how much muscle they believe the dinosaur had by the shape of the scull in order to determine how much bite force the beast had. And i defy anyone to convince me that a longer, different shape snout is gonna increase the bite simply because i understand basic leverage. it can't be bone. it's the muscle, the adrenaline, the motivation that determines the bite. And Don't under-emphasize the adrenaline factor - a small woman lifted a car off her child years ago - it's motivation. basically, it's gonna come down to The Dog.

"It's not the size of the dog in the fight; it's the size of the fight in the dog." ring any bells?

well usually one would assume the larger the muzzle the larger the head

I dont think it even matters as much about the breed of dog that is on the other side of the [] as the rules for engagement. If you actually look at bulldog VS (insert non-bulldog breed) fight the win percentage falls dramatically when the bulldog has to adhere to other rules. Cajun rules are damn near made with the bulldog in mind. The scratch is the key. When you look at the rules of engagement for other breeds you will see big differences and in cases where there are no rules (backyard style) then it really does come down to the dog in question. I would actaully venture to say that when going uphill the other breed has the advantage because of size but if they couldnt close within 10-15 minutes i think the bulldog would have a huge advantage (assuming it is a conditioned dog). I dont think that APBTs are invincible or unbeatable, but based on a theoretic match under cajun riles i would give them a very high win percentage against most any breed out there.

i've been saying that bolded part since the thread started. leverage and surface area are any animals best friend or worst enemy.

no it doesnt always work that way.

i agree with this but Diesel are you going on the assumption that the non-bully dog wont be conditioned? i would think its common sense to increase the stamina of any combat bred dog otherwise why fight it?

if the bigger the head statement was true this these big bowling ball head bullies ,short things we call bullies would have a strong bite then?

i have a buddy in russia were dog figghting is legal and he sent me footage of kangals vs pitbulls , rotts vs pitbulls, presa vs pits, akita and dogo vs pits. and i can honestly say most of the time the pit does come out on top. one kangal jump the box to get the hell out. others the rott was winning then around the 18 min mark he had nothing left and the pitt kicked into action. two akitas curred out, the dogo was BEAT DOWN BAD i dont condone this , but it was intresting to see a dog that is outwieghed by 30 to 60 pounds win. which says alot about the apbt.

The GSD was not bred to bite a human either. The original intent of the GSD was that of a flock guardian. And the Rottweiler was originally bred to be a draft & stock dog, but it was used as a guard dog as well. It herded the flock or carried the cart to market & on the way back it guarded the purse of it's owner.

I can't recall where I heard the muzzle type theory, but it proves itself in the fact that the GSD - a dog who's muzzle length is likely as long (or longer) than it's head circumference has 2nd hardest bite in the dog world. Not the APBT. The GSD. And I don't know if any of you have caught a Belgian Maliniois on a sleeve before. They are usually quite narrow headed, especially the females. But they're long muzzled & can bite hella hard, so much so that they can leave bruises through the sleeve!

And I agree scientists do measure skulls of animals to investigate bite force. But I think they do that more to ascertain muscle attachment to the skull & jaws rather than simply measure the head.

There are exceptions to the rule of course - a grizzly has a big head & short muzzle & bites hellishly hard, as do animals like the lion & the hyena. But those are completely different species. In the canine world generally as a rule it is the dogs who have a muzzle length equal or longer than their head size that seem to bite the hardest. In the wild we have wolves & coyotes, in the domestic world we have GSD, Mals, Dutch Shepherds & according to the study the average wild dog.

If big head + short muzzles = hard bite the English Bulldog or AmBully would be killers! And we all know they're not. lol.

But that is JMHO ...

i scanned this thread and wont get into the argument of bite force blah blah....but i will add this: if other breeds were superior in the [ ] as a breed, dont ya think all the old timers woulda been breeding Akitas and Rottweilers for canine combat instead of the APBT? there was obviously a sense of competition and to go into another mans lifes work with another breed and win would have been humiliating despite the size difference.

We all know the APBT as a breed over all is superior. But to say ALL APBTs will beat ALL non-APBTs is ludicrous. Sometimes there will be a dog of another breed who WILL beat an APBT. There is record of a man who took his APBT into a Chow mix or Shepherd mix I think & had to pick his dog up to save it.

Overall as a breed? APBT, yes.

Individually? No prediction can be made. Depends on the dogs involved.

nope not all.

the APBT is a light weight dog, try to go lift a rotti, akita, or mastiff into or out of a [].

the APBT is energetic the only other dog i could think of that might beat an APBT in that department is the husky because it can control an change its metabolism AT WILL which equals insane stamina

i'll never seen an APBT hunt another breed that wasnt in a [] so isnt impossible to give a diffinate this will happen answer.

my point was that if another breed was the better one it would be the go to [] dog. folks wouldnt have any problem gettin a dog in and out if it was winnin for them and makin a little money

ok i get ya.

i think it would be to many YEARS and much money to make a new breed from 3 or 4 prized breeds.

I still remember this moment, Well 1988 I lived on <ST1:pLong Island</ST1:p
By 1991 I have a Male & Female PB. I walk my dogs & every time at a certain house
This female <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[IMG]<ST1:pAkita</ST1:p barks from the balcony (vicious) YEAR after YEAR, My dogs never once bark back. by 1995 I am moving & on The Last Day of my Move ,it’s a hot summer day, I am using my work truck a retired school bus type of van for the move the bus had the typical walk in door as a true bus . I had both dogs tied up inside with about 8 or so feet of rope so they could come out to get some fresh air or piss .Wile I am loading boxes I see the Akita owner walking towards my truck with the Akita, It never for a second occurred to me my dogs were in danger, In a split second I realized I had just made a mistake with the 8 foot of rope deal.
As I see the woman getting closer I yell out hold it - stop - she keeps walking. It’s to late my dogs burst out like race horses snarling, the woman and the Akita ran for there lives Wile the Akita was looking towards my dogs she was not baking now and was not pulling to get at my dogs . Nothing happened I got lucky but I’ll never forget that day when Year after Year that dog barked at my dogs but turned chicken.
I realize that Akita does not represent all <ST1:pAkitas</ST1:p
