What's the definition of a "cold dog"?

I started browsing a really long thread about whether or not you guys would breed to a "cold dog" -- but then, at least as far as I browsed -- I found no consensus as to what a cold dog really was. Someone equated it with being a cur, and that made no sense to me at all -- a cur being one that quits and a "cold dog" being one that never started. The obvious contradiction being that a dog that hasn't started can't be said to quit.

Okay, so a cold dog is one that never started. So does it just lie there and take it? Is that what a cold dog is? Or is it one that will fight defensively to protect itself but refuse to scratch? I choose the latter for my own particular definition of what a cold dog is.

Sly Fox might be one of the better known so-called cold dogs that first Steinberg and then I myself bred to. He sired a number of winners and at least a handful of champions as well, Red Danger being one of them.

Sly Fox was out of Freddy Jones's Ch. Major and, like his sire, was an excellent ear dog -- at least for as long as he had to fight, for he never made a scratch in his life. The fact of the matter was that he'd fight for as long as he was forced to, often putting the quit on whatever dog he was fighting -- but then only fighting defensively. Steinberg said Sly Fox was one of the best ear dogs he'd ever seen and would have been unbeatable if only he'd scratch.

Would I breed to a cold dog? But of course that's exactly what both Steinberg and I did. Sly Fox was one of the most talented dogs Arnie or I ever saw and he put the quit on at least half a dozen other dogs even while not wanting to fight, fighting defensively only. Unfortunately, Sly Fox produced a number of cold dogs himself -- but the ones that did start were top notch -- Red Danger, Steinberg's Heidi, my Dusty, and several others whose names I don't recall.

So I say don't rule a "cold dog" out for breeding purposes. He's not a cur and might well be a best bet for breeding to.

I've never seen a dog that would not fight to defend its self. As far as fighting until the other stopped or they were separated - yup - seen that. Would I breed to them (dog or gyp,) depends on how badly I wanted that blood and what else was around at the time. Just wondering if anyone had ever heard of a cold dog and gyp that were bred and if any game pups came off of that?

So if a dog scratches 10 times and won't on the 11th it's a cur. But if it won't scratch the first time it's cold? Idk to me it seems that one that won't scratch back is curring to the dog across from it, I wouldn't think that it being the first scratch or the 5th or 15th would matter. I've never understood the cold/cur argument yes plenty of both have been bred, and has produced good dogs. But I don't think I would prefer either over the other.

A cold dog doesnt want to go from the start.Never starts up or fires up which makes it a cold dog.Sure it will defend under attack or until it can get away.A cur will fire up just want continue when it is shown its not the world beater it thought it was.Which there are many different cur situations but a cold one is just one that wont fire up.i agree fully on not prefering one over the other

"So if a dog scratches 10 times and won't on the 11th it's a cur."

Yes, exactly. Or if not a cur, a quitter. Or if not a quitter, reasonably game, depending.

"But if it won't scratch the first time it's cold?"

Not exactly. It's "cold" if it has never scratched, never started, never will start.

    This is not rocket science.

I think there are a few types of cold dogs. My take and from what I have witnessed is that there are basically three types. I am NOT saying it's cookie cut. I tend to never cookie cut things with these dogs, nor label them to some extremes.

The first type I've seen just will not take up the fight. They will stand there and look at the other dog as if to say "WTF ya doin'?" They don't run, nor do they even try to fight the other dog off.

The second type I have seen is the dog that will nibble or try to gnaw a dog off of it. Still won't initiate a thing and if parted will still just sit or stand there without a clue.

The third type is the one Maff alluded to. It may scratch and scratch yet not take hold. The scratching instinct is bred so much into it that it does scratch. Not to a fighting completion, but it goes across as if it's going to.

I consider any and all of these three types, IF OF AGE, to be cold dogs.

I've got the terminology down lol. What I'm trying to express is IMO cold/cur/quitters all fall into the same category in my book. Some people hold cold dogs in a higher regard than a quitter which to me doesn't make much sense.

I've come to the mindset that a cold dog (mature of course) is just a Cur who have yet to prove themselves otherwise.Cold makes people feel better. If he's at starting age and aint started yet he's a cur .if he starts up good he's proved he's no cur so far.if he don't start well it is what it is.hes a cur .do what u want with him its your dog.But dont be ashamed .Be honest

  14. I don't know you and you don't know me and I am new on this site but to the question that you ask will anybody breed to a cold dog and answer to that is is all depends how is the dog bread and who is his parents if the dog blood is valuable and you don't want to lose that dog or the blood I will breed to a cold dog why do you think white tab was never been bitten because his blood was valuable and as you can see Frisco has been touch and everybody say he was a cur but you see that how he's producing so it can go either way some peoples won't breed to a cold dog and some peoples will bring to a cold dog it all depends on the situation

All fine, but the question is "What is your definition of a cold dog?"

  16. A definition of a cold dog is a dog that hadn't been started yet or has no interest in other animals a dog that if you let something loose on him he just sit there and take the punishment it won't even fight back but like I said I could be wrong everybody has their own opinions

Let me get this straight your saying Whites Tab never saw a tooth or was bitten. That dog was tested more times than most from what I have heard.Irene was maybe cold from some stories I dont know for sure.

There ARE a few dogs from our past that were untouched. Well known dogs. But being untouched and being cold are two completely different things almost always. In fact, if a dog was untouched and never tried, one wouldn't even know if it were to be cold or not. BTW if you are making claims about a well known dog, make sure you are accurate.

They said TAB was COLD & UNTESTESTED

I say "PIPE DOWN"! Keep your ears open, and your pie holes SHUT, and you may just learn something from an old dummy.

White's Tab ROM is a well known dog for his producing off of the Jeep line. Yet, he also had some great siblings including... Garrett's Little Redboy ROM, Palm's Ernie ROM, Ramrod's Ch Tramp, and other winners. But do not be misled. In my opinion, TAB could have more than likely made CH himself off of sheer GAMENESS alone. He did however lack the mouth of say his brother CH Tramp. Tab was a quick, intense dog. Almost appearing like a cat in the square. There was heavy influence to match TAB, but it was decided that if they weren't 100% sure they could take him all the way, & I quote "WHAT THE FUCK IS ONE GOING TO PROVE? OR 2? I KNOW WHAT HE IS!!!" "I'LL PUT HIM TO BROOD STUD STOCK, AND ROLL HIS ASS LIKE WHEELCHAIRS, N I BETTER NOT WITNESS A FLINCH OF QUIT!" And there it was. The start of a true LEGACY of blood. I will not call names, but I know people who had offspring, and 1/2 siblings, and sire who begged they stopped "WHEELCHAIRING" TAB, b/c had he quit, or shown a bad sign, alot of PEDDLERS WE'RE OUT OF ALOT OF DINERO! Never happened though. In my opinion he would have done it in for 3! Know one truely knows what he went through. Tab was 2 and three dogged, sometimes. Hour marks were 15 minute marks to his level of wind. Tab was a slow starting dog, who didn't warm up until 30! Heart of a Lion, he had. I'm talking 90 degree weathers, skull drug. Give him more credit than some modern ch dogs who have yet to produce anything. And will nev
