TOLEDO, OH -- Using a grant from Pet Smart Charities, the Lucas County dog warden, in partership with Humane Ohio, will spay or neuter 500 Pit Bulls for $5.00 per dog. The program will include a microchip to help owners track their dog should they become lost or separated.

Dogs must live in the City of Toledo and have a current 2011 dog license to qualify for the program.

To enroll their dogs in the program, pit bull owners can call Humane Ohio at (419) 266-5607 to schedule an appointment and must mention the Fix-a-Bull program. Owners should be prepared to provide proof of residency and a dog license at the time of the surgery. Licenses will not be available to purchase at Humane Ohio.

"We are thrilled to be addressing the local Pit Bull overpopulation issue at the base -- with how many dogs are breeding," said Julie Lyle, Lucas County Dog Warden. "Over 40 percent of dogs admitted to the Lucas County Dog Warden this year have been Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes, and only 11 percent of stray Pit Bulls being claimed by their owners and a small number transferred out for possible adoption, the numbers can be staggering."
