BlackRock, the world's largest ETF provider sold a lot of paper gold in Q4 and opened up a new position in paper Silver. BlackRock understands exactly how the ETF structure works - I'm wondering if they did this in anticipation of more bullish activity into physical Silver. After all, the ETF players make the most money in a stable environment as they continue to reap the expense ratio of the ETF. Especially for a commodity ETF, volatility will hurt its returns as they have a twofold problem: 1) it is usually cost prohibitive to buy and sell large scales of physical product for the ETF, especially in a short period of time, and 2) paper contracts create volatility as they involve futures contracts which have a time decay, this then creates "contango" because they constantly have to sell their near-dated Futures contracts for a lower price and they have to buy a further out Futures contract for a higher price.
