    In Denmark this week:

Police in Skive are considering charges against a dog owner, after an eight-year-old girl was bitten to death

Police in the northern Jutland town of Skive are considering whether to press charges against a local dog owner in the nearby village of Lihme, after his dog attacked and killed an eight-year-old girl, daily newpaper Jyllands-Posten reports.

According to Danish dog law, owners are responsible for their dogs if they harm people.

‘We are waiting for the results of the autopsy, which will explain the cause of death. After that we will decide on whether to press charges. But it seems like a breach of the dog law,’ said Deputy Police Inspector Finn Jørgensen at the Skive Police.

Jørgensen said the dog’s owner was not known to have broken the law before.

The police do not know exactly why the dog suddenly attacked the little girl and bit her in the throat, but another child said that the girl only wanted to pet the dog as they passed it in the road. The girl was already dead when an ambulance arrived at the scene.

The dog’s owner volunteered to have it put down after the incident.

‘As far as we know, the dog has never attacked anyone before or shown aggressive behaviour,’ a Lihme police officer said.

The victim did not live in the village, but was visiting her father, who is a local resident.

The dog was a large, long-haired sheepdog, of a race called Briard. The race is generally not known as aggressive.

The incident is the first one in many years of a dog killing a person. There have been similar incidents in recent years in Norway, Germany, and Greenland.

...Tragic for the little girl and her family. Tragic for the owners of the dog as well. Still, I'm thankful this breed is not a little short haired dog that resembles a Pit Bull, because we already know what the headlines would have been...
