What is the best way to attach cowhide to spring pole or flirt pole so that it stays?

Do you just knife a hole in the hide and run the rope through?

 

I used a drill and put three small holes in it and wove the rope through it.

 

how long does stillwater usually take on orders? i've been waiting a month for one break stick.
