This is an email that I received from CHAKO. It's just a brief overview of how things went at the hearing last night...

    Auburn Reviews Pit Bull Ordinance

Last night we attended the Auburn City Council meeting to hear the new dog ordinance that requires Pit Bulls over six months of age to be spayed or neutered and limits everyone to a 2-dog limit per household. Twenty-eight members of the public spoke to the city council, including Dawn Capp from Chako Pit Bull Rescue, Lynn Howe from New Hope Rescue, Dr. Randy Robinson (a veterinarian), Bill Hemby from PetPac, and Cindy Long from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier parent club, and all but one opposed the ordinance.

At the end of the meeting, the city council members voted as follows to move the ordinance to a second reading with the breed-specific language intact:

Bridget Powers: Yes (though she indicated she's unsure about the breed-specific provisions)
Dr. Bill Kirby: Yes (though he stated he would vote against the ordinance if it continued to include breed specific language)
Keith Nesbitt: Yes (He wants laws that restrict people's property rights. He doesn't like Pit Bulls)
Kevin Hanley: Yes (He originally wanted a Pit Bull ban until he found out that state law prohibits that)
Mike Holmes: No (He stated he believes it's the Deed Not the Breed). He's the hero of the evening amongst the city council members.
Since Bridget Powers appears to be the swing vote, we're urging everyone (but especially Auburn residents) to email her and urge her to oppose any breed-specific ordinance. bridgetpowers@sbcglobal.net

Check out the video on our YouTube Channel from the Auburn City Council meeting -- you can hear some of the testimony, see the miniature Bull Terrier that falls under Auburn's proposed definition of Pit Bull, and listen to Mike Holmes and Kevin Hanley's opposing viewpoints.
