Biting Flies!!!!!!

Good Morning Everybody,

It seems that in the past weeks, biting flies have become a real problem, I got rid of the ants, fleas, ticks, and everything else, but now I got this damn biting flies tearing my dogs up!!!!:mad:

I keep the yard clean, and spray the yard and dogs down with ACV every weekend. Is there anyone else dealing with these issue???

We use to hang fly paper traps from the trees that over hung the yard, it's not the prettiest way to go about it because it's an eye sore but it helped a bit (if you don't have trees you could easily rigg something up. It's not a save all tip but it helped reduce our problem) A more expensive method you could use is skin so soft from avon. makes their coats look great and makes them smell good as well as keeping biting pests like fleas, ticks and flys at bay.

 

LOL........ I wont buy avon for my wife, she will be damned if I buy some for the dogs........ Thanks AGK I do have some trees that hang over the dogs houses I am going to go get some paper traps....

 

Two things that have worked great for me one is the Fly trap in a bottle which you can probably make yourself the second is the Fly bait granules that the flys eat and die but you have to make sure your dogs dont get at it......If you have infestation its best to use both.

P.S. Many have tried those paper fly traps and they are no way near as effective as both methods I mentioned above.

 

would the fly bait granules be at a feed store or do they have to be ordered online?

 

Most feed stores do carry it but not all......but if you cant find a feed store that carries it then you could look and order it online.

 

We have found that the horse spray for fly's is Bronco-Equine Fly Spray, you can get it at a feed store, but it works!!

 

Ive been having this problem too.The flys are chewing there ears up ,just started happening about two weeks ago.Im gonna try the horse fly spray,i think that might work the best.

 

We have an abundance of biting flies around here throughout the summer time and one thing that usually works well is Neem Oil. It's organic and safe for the dogs. Not only does it act as a natural repellent for mosquitoes and biting flies but it's great to keep fleas and ticks away and can also be used for mange. You can either use it pure but it is usually recommended to dilute it a little because it is so potent and "might" irritate skin. I haven't had that happen yet personally. You can mix 1oz with a gallon of water and a few drops of dish soap (that's to emulsify the oil) and put it in a spray bottle. Shake it up very well and spray down the dog every two weeks or more depending on the seriousness of the fly problem.
Also depending on the quality of the oil (refinded or unrefined) it will harden even at roomtemperature so you might need to hold the spray bottle under a bit of warm water at times to melt down the oil residue on the inside of the bottle. Hope this helps!

anyone ever heard of rubbing the dogs in motor oil? an old timer told me it works great and last awhile on their coat and no insects will touch'em. any ideas?

 

Yeah, I heard that before. It's a great way to give your dog a one way ticket to skin cancer and kidney failure among other things. It's kind of like that whole burned motoroil for mange crap. When it comes to my own dogs I always keep the mindset of "Would I eat that?" or "Would I put that on my skin". If the answer is no, the dogs won't be getting it either.

 

Okay, I know a lot of you swear by the apple cider vingear. I used it on my horse. But after a while it seemed to not be effective. Regular horse fly spray works best. Not the Bronco, but the expensive stuff. Maybe we have super flies!
But that pink stuff (swat) works best on the ears. My neighbor has chows on a chain setup and thats all she uses.

I am definitely interested in the Neem Oil. I have the Neem shampoo and it is hard to find by the gallon. But it works great! Where do you get the oil? I would definitely buy some of that!

I don't know about yall, but we haven't seen as many frogs around our house as usual. Bats either for that matter. I really believe that has something to do with the abundance of extra critters.

 

Ive seen burnt motor oil and sulfur rubbed on a dog work miracles on mange ,and other unidentifide skin problems .But ive never had to go that route myself.But it does work

 

Your out of your Fing mind if you even SUGGEST rubbing used, unused, or god damn Royal Purple full synthetic on your dog. Oil is cancerous period, and anyone who is rubbing oil on their dog should be hauled away.

 

If you would have read my post more carefully,you would have saw that i said "IVE NEVER HAD TO GO THAT ROUTE MYSELF".The man asked a question and i gave him an answer.He asked if it worked ,and i told him what ive seen with my own eyes.It works.He didn't ask if it was dangerous or cancerous,and i didn't feel the need to tell to him.If he's talking to old timers he should know,plus its common sense

 

I did read your post. Just because something works doesn't mean you should give it as advice. Hell you can kill head lice by pouring kerosene over your head but I'm not going to go telling someone about it. Just because you say "I have never done it" doesn't mean the person you are telling isn't going to try it. I figured that was COMMON SENSE.

 

I gave him an answer,not advice, the old timer gave him the advice.If your gonna use an analogly think of it like this,he asked if jumping off a sky scraper would kill him,i told him yes,that will kill you.I did not tell him to go do it.However i will clarify now so you can stop worrying. Scratchy DONT DO IT it can cause cancer and harm your dog .

There was another thread on this subject a few weeks back and cow tags were mentioned. How do they work? Does the tag have to come in contact with the skin like on the cows ears or does it just repel by smell?
