My dog couldn't handle it, I think the potatoes didn't work well with his stomach. On the other hand, my buddy's dog loves it and is doing fine. Just recently Nature's Variety released a dog foog to compete with innova evo (I'm not the only who noticed their dog not being able to handle it), and their new one is bonded with tapioca instead of potato. I'll be trying that new one in a week or so.

    Yeah....
There is nothing wrong with the protein content.

When you say that your dog couldn't handle it, how did he react to it?

As I understood it...high protein isnt a problem if the dog has perfectly healthy kidneys. Also, the high protein content wont CAUSE kidney problems but it will bring them out immediately if there are any hiding. It cant be good for an everyday dog to get that much protein on a daily basis. Do body builders who quit lifting still "load" up, eat multiple eggs a day, and continue protein shakes? No, because unless you are burning all that extra it just becomes fat and takes its toll on your body.

runny stools. I even weaned him off wellness slowly to evo, but to no avail. I had to switch to again. They feed evo to the k9 cops in my area of NC and they all love it. The guy at the store told me that some dogs handle the potato well and some don't.

    Exactly.

My dog runs around 2 miles 3 days a week plus a good bit of flirt pole here and there. He also gets walked for about an hour on the other days.
I am not too worried about him not getting enough exercise.

Well, I will have to wait and see. I just found out that the store has a shipment of Natures Variety Raw Instinct coming in on wednesday. Unfortunately, I do not have enough food to last through wednesday. Therefore, he is going to get the Evo.
Thanks for the heads up. I will keep you all posted on how he is doing on it.

my gyp got it for 2 months no work and got shredded....she cant handle rice and corn.i give her evo and wellness (same co) lamb and oats. protien dont cause kidney failure..not saying you said that rock.but with end stage renal patients we suggest low residue diets low in protien cause hi pro will work the kidneys to hard when in failure.

I feed EVO and its done great for my girls, but i was switching from Eukanuba. As for you. You switching from one great performance feed to another so it should work out pretty good for you. I really like it. They seem to LOVE it.
Their coats are looking a lot better and there is less waste in the yard. Their energy has gone up more than 50%! Its a great performance feed IMO.

I fed him a 1/4 Evo and 3/4 Natures Variety last night. The thing is, he tried to pick out all of the Evo and leave the NV. So, I am pretty sure he ate a little more than a 1/4 Evo. This Evo stuff really stinks by the way.
His stools haven't changed a bit so I am under the impression that he will do fine on it so far. I am giving him a third of Evo tonight.

Exactly. Thats what happened with my shepherd. We found out about her kidney problems when we switched her to EVO.
As for runny poos and such, this is common when switching to a higher wuality food. Not so common in instances you are switching from wellness or similar foods to evo, because both are holistic foods, but it can happen. Dogs can go into a detox when switched to a better diet. This is the way of getting rid of all the junk stored in their body from the previous food. Symptoms are wide, but runny poos, ear infections, skin infections tend to get worse. It depends on the health and condition of the dog before goin on the new food. When I brought Wednesday home and switched her to EVO, she had the runs for a week and not great poos for another week. And her poops were big. She was eating a lot of food, puked a couple of times, got an ear infection. But she was on really crappy food before she came to me, although she seemed perfectly healthy. Well its been about a month and a half now and she is fine. Small, solid, soft poops, great coat that glimmers, beautiful muscle tone (she was a little chunky before), lots of energy and shes not eating as much. Her body was simply expeling all the crapstored in her from inadequate food. This is detox. Symptoms usually last a week to 2 weeks but can be much longer. This doesn't happen to every dog. But things tend to get worse before they get better. When swtiching to a high quality food you cannot bail when you first see signs, unless they are really bad and unsafe for the dog (runs with blood in it).
As for the quality of EVO, its a great feed, especially for high performance dogs. The benefits have already been stated by others, and I have never seen a dog have a problem with it (except my shepherd bitch).

    ***UPDATE***
Buck has had diarrhea for about a week. At times, it would seem that he was getting better but the diarrhea would return. At first, I attributed to it as something he may have eaten that he wasn't supposed to. Nevertheless, I kept an eye on it for the next few days and it never got better. Also, I noticed that his energy was lower than usual and he ate less. Following the five days of diarrhea I decided to change his food back to Nature's Variety. I did not gradually switch it over because I was concerned that the EVO was causing the problems and if I gradually changed over, it would not make much difference because either way he may have runny stools.
Within the first day of the switch, his stools went back to normal and his energy is off the wall. Therefore, I have to conclude that the problems were based on the Innova Evo. Personally, I wouldn't recommend the food. It may be good for other dogs but it is definitely not good for mine.
By the way, my dog gets plenty of exercise and he never eats scraps, etc. Currently, he gets about 3-5 sessions of flirt pole at about 15-20 minutes each every day. He walks/runs at least 2 miles daily (usually runs), he swims almost every other day on and off for 3-4 hours, springpole daily, fetch daily, free run daily. We also go hiking once a week. I mention this because I know someone is going to assume that the problems may have occurred as a result of a high protein diet and insufficient exercise.
I have been feeding him EVO for almost four months and never had a problem until the past week.

The runny stools is caused by the high protein content at 42% and if you give more then the recommended cups then the protein is even higher which could lead to runny stools and even kidney problems. Some dogs can handle this high protein but some cannot especially if he is not use to that high protein content unless you fed him high protein since he was a puppy. Too much protein at one time can cause digestion problems infact too much of anything is bad for you.

Personally, I don't believe the protein was the problem. Maybe I am wrong. The truth is, there is much more valid scientific data that disproves the "high protein is bad myth" than those that support it. In fact, do your best, I doubt you will ever find anyone that has any reputable knowledge that supports the myth. Here are just a couple of links that I found during a quick search. Also, during this search I could not find anything that supported this myth. They all went against it.
All information I have found has said that it can cause problems if there are existing kidney problems. It won't cause them. A healthy animal should have no problem filtering it.
