Pre76 of course so talk like we have some sense forum. You always hear people who talk about who ducked who and say it in a disrespectful manner. My question is if u saw something you knew you couldn't beat is it smart to duck it or should you go into anything your weight?

I would wanna see where my dogs stacked up against the best... No sense in feeding mediocre hounds..see where ya dog are at and go from there.if I couldn't compete with wat I had .i would try something else ..but ducking is not good for the game or your yard.. Imo

Its smart to duck obviously why waste your money. Doesn't mean your shit isn't good too but why go into an obvious loss.

Some call it cowardly and some call it smart. I look at it like this.. If i put my dogs weight out there otw and someone picked it up i would go into whatever dog that was. If someone said thats a bad mofo that has killed three then i would not let that scare me into not continuing on with the show as scheduled. Now on the other hand if i went to a show and saw with MY OWN EYES a dog at the same weight as the hound i planned on hooking i would not go calling out that dog if i knew my dog would be outclassed and outmatched. I feel like if you know your dog isnt of the caliber of a dog you saw with your own eyes and you hook that dog any way you are doing a diservice to your dog. Not only that but you are wasting your 6, 8, or 12 weeks by doing a keep. You should just hand the money over to the other camp.

Exactly. If a weight gets picked up thats a different situation than knowingly hooking into your death.

Here is a funny story about picking spots (kind of the opposite of ducking). Once upon a time in a land far, far away a 7 yr old champion was matched into what was supposed to be a very good dog. The champion walked through said dog in under a half hour-the dog quit. The people with the losing dog could not believe what happened & so opened their dog's weight up again.(There was no foul play-nor claims of any). A very good dog man who saw the original match thought it would be some easy money and took the weight. His dog got killed in over an hour. The moral of the story is picking spots & ducking don't always end with what seems to be the obvious outcome. The only way to know if your dog can beat another dog regardless of what the other dog has done before, is to match into it-all the rest is just speculation. Or as a good dogman once said "Son, that is why we have dog fights!"

Oh and claiming someone ducked you is kind of like being proud of collecting forfeits...lol.

Agreed benthere. An oldtimer told me he had a bad ass ch male who was otw until her saw homer go. Said he changed his dogs weight immediately lmao says his dog was the real deal but why waste money and a good dog. He said what he saw from homer was unreal. Made sense to me lol good post tigerboy

The answer is easy,,why keep a hound if ya can't race against the best that other's think they have///????????..true their can be different divisions,,so most back then kept quite ,till they knew their was the right comp out their for them...it has a-lot to do with common sense...some-times ya have a runner that can run againest any-thing,,others have to be balanced.....///////????????????...ya can call it what people want..but it boil's down to a-lot of things...but the main thing then as now,,is the quality of what you have/r/think ya have...................

Good post and points.... If you are open and weight gets picked up and you back out or duck that's just a dam shame.... But not looking hook into an ace that you feel your hound can't hang with is different. If I have seen with my own eyes a dog that I know for sure will have advantage over mine, what's it sayin bout me if I put him in there? Also I feel like this.... Some dogs on the yard might not be as good as others so it could also have alot to do with how much confidence has in ones dog! But if you got the balls to say that a dog is otw them I say you gotta follow thru no matter who answers the call, but actively searching out something unwinnable just ain't smart! And like someone else said actively searching out what you think will be an easy W can get ya screwed over too!!!..........

yes it would and should be different if u seen the dog in action and knew u didn't have nothing close to that caliber dog.yes it would be wise not to put your dog in there.but if your weight was picked up u shouldn't back out when u find out what your going against.when u put your weight out there it shouldn't be accept all challengers but these guys..i would feel a sense of pride if ppl paid forfeits when they knew it was my camp there going against.that says alot about u and your hounds

Blue sometimes you can have a phenomenial dog but you still aren't going to beat an ace. Doesn't mean ur dogs not top notch but sometimes you get a dog that just isn't going to be beat unless you put it against another ace.

Lol how can there be two aces?! One isn't an ace then, now is it? O.o

On that note... This whole conversation stems from the fact that someone chose a dog that they feel doesnt stand a chance of winning against WHATEVER someone brings... That means someone needs to redefine their definition of a match dog... Simple as that

That argument is invalid thats like saying how can two cars be fast, car A being the fastest in the world doesn't by default make car B slow. There can be a better of two aces.

If ya open for weight pulling,,ya open to all....if ya think ya can't with one ya have, ya keep your mouth closed..till ya see/r/think there is a fair comp for him/her......no matter wat ya going out to win the weight pulling/r/obstacle course;etc;etc...ya will have confidence in your dog for that day...if ya have an out this world hound ur not going to worry...are ya...////???????????ya will be open to the world...sure thats way it was..........some would call the first spot picking, fact's are a-lot do it...it's called common sense...or ya jus get rid.....

Only one car can be fastest. If car A is faster than car B, car B isn't an ace. Sure it doesnt mean car B is shit just inferior n therefore... NOT AN ACE! Aces can't be beat. I think the term is silly to begin with in that respect. It's a lovely term to tout a dog with if ur into stroking the ego.

Who says aces can't be beat? In competition there has to be a winner/loser eventually if you bring two "unbeatable" dogs one will lose. Expanding on your definition there can only be one "Ace" dog ever walking the planet at a time. Thats silly.
