I've used it in thepast fine. Now I get the $2 ivermectin paste for horses. It doses up to 1500lbs I think so I just give a 50lb dose for a 33lb dog

  6. The truth is you have to be careful with a lot of the horse wormers when used in dogs. The main reason is because of under or overdoses of certain drugs. While the ivomec dose in zimecterin gold is correct on the "super-high" end of the dog dose & is generally considered “safe” for most dogs, the praziquantel part is actual far too low to be effective for tapes. So you are really wasting your money in buying the “gold”.

The best solution would be to stick with the generic ivomec paste or injectable and DO THE MATH!!! The normal high end of the dog dose should be 200mcg/kg – if using the injectable that’s about .1 ml per 10lbs of body wt. The paste dose can vary per manufacturer so just be sure your using the correct dose. If it is a 1.55% paste you can use the normal wt lines on the tube.

BE VERY CAREFUL when using horse and cattle drugs, horses tend to have a VERY long intestinal tract and they don’t normally need high doses of drugs to be effective for them, whereas a dog, they are in & out so to speak. Drugs like safeguard paste (panacur) for horses is virtually ineffective for a dog because you need to give ten times the horse dose to a dog to get the desired effect. Not to mention the tapes it gets are not the ones that dogs tend to get.

For tapes look for the generic "fish tape meds" it has pure praziquantel in it. I think it is Thomas Labs that sells it.

The dangerous flip side to that is you can also kill a dog with some horse/cattle meds, such as the “Quest” dewormers. So the moral is DO NOT give horse/cattle meds that are not avalible in a doggie form – use only known safe drugs, and DO THE MATH!!!<O:p</O:p

  7. Are You using Valbazen just as a dewormer? I couldn't find anything to support if it can be used as a heartworm preventive as well. I know it is used in cattle & in dogs sometimes for giardia. Thanks

  10. That’s interesting, I'll see if I can dig anything else up about the heartworm aspect. Thanks!

Only a fool would use it as it's useless for a dog owner! Though you might be excellent at cutting it into sizes you need. Sure it's very easy given it's in increments of 250lbs on the syringe. Sure it's easy to dose a 50lb dog with it. After all it would need a whopping 1.49lbs worth of that wormer. Who couldn't easily chop that 250lb dosage into 250 segments and correctly dose their dog?

Three suggestions: 1) never give advice on a subject you're clueless about!, 2) learn the difference between a cow and dog and 3) after you've complete 1 & 2, then follow your suggestion of "do the math".

~since it's apparent no one has purchased the Merck Veterinary Manual~
    http://www.merckveterinarymanual.com/mvm/htm/bc/tdig08.htm

Despite what the idiots Fire&Earth and LivewieT recommend (100mcg/lb) we can plainly see the correct dosage is actually 2.72mcg/lb of Ivomec monthly for heartworm preventative.

  17. I've been giving it to my 5 Plotts and my old Chow/Aussie for 4 years with no side affects and no heartworms.

My vet is a large animal specialist by the way and is the one who checks them for heartworms twice a year and knows what I'm doing. Keeps asking me why I keep bringing in the dogs when there is nothing wrong with them, lol.

  20. Throw the shit away and get the proper meds. It's impossible to dose the meds properly for a dog.
