West Tenn. Town Bans New Pit Bull Dogs

    Memphis,TN -- Another Ordinance Limits Number of Pets at Residences

    The city of Dyer in Gibson County has banned new pit bull dogs.

    A recently passed ordinance "grandfathers" pit bulls already in the city, but places new requirements on owners.

    Another new ordinance limits to six the number of dogs and cats residents of single-family houses may keep. The maximum is two each in apartments. The ordinance applies to animals over six months old.

    The ordinance states that keeping a large number of dogs and cats drives down the value of other people's property in the neighborhood.

    Dyer residents who already have pit bulls must buy an annual $30 city license for them and comply with the ordinance restrictions on how the animals must be confined.
