    (WSYR-TV/AP) -

UNION, N.J. (AP) - A major recall of pet food has animal owners worried and scrambling to find substitutes.

The recall involves dozens of brands made by Menu Foods. The company says an undetermined number of cats and dogs have suffered kidney failure after eating the food and about ten have died.

The pet food is widely sold throughout North America under 48 different dog-food brands and 40 cat-food labels, including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba. The products are distributed by major retailers like Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

Two other pet food companies -- Nestle Purina and Hill's Pet Nutrition -- are voluntarily recalling some of their products that are made by Menu Foods.

The Food and Drug Administration doesn't know yet what's wrong with the food. But Menu Foods says the recalled products were made with wheat gluten from a new supplier. That supplier has been replaced.

Consumers with questions can call Menu Foods at 1-866-895-2708.

Local veterinarian Dr. Liz Dole says if your pet has been eating the food, stop using it right away and even if your cat or dog seems to be acting normal, put a call in to your vet just in case. Dole says they may want to do run some blood work.

Here are some signs you should watch for if you are concerned about kidney failure: lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting and increased thirst.

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J.
