Suffolk Man Charged With Shooting Pitbull

Portsmouth, VA -- A 21-year old Suffolk man is facing a felony charge of animal cruelty after officials say he shot and killed a pit bull Monday.

According to Suffolk authorities, Lavaris D. Jones got into a verbal argument with the dog's owner in the 300 block of Hunter Street. Officials say during the argument, Jones retried a rifle and fired several shots. The animal died at the scene.

Jones, of the 100 block of Charlotte Avenue, was arrested shortly after the alleged shooting.

In addition to animal cruelty, Jones is charged with reckless handling of a firearm, discharging a firearm within 100 feet of a roadway and possession of a firearm by a convicted felony.

Jones is being held without bond in the Western Tidewater Regional Jail
