Sporting Staffords

  1. "Ch.Oscar" won four matches in Ireland. In 1975 he was matched into his grandsire the previously unbeaten "Rory"."Oscar" was declared the winner after "Rory" was picked up game. His other victories being over "Lockes Rebel", "Gooses Sultan" and "Mad Mo Moffats Red",all previously unbeaten Stafford's.These events were not reported and everyone who was in the game acknowledged these dogs as being the best around at that time.D.R.never sought publicity but feels that "Oscar" deserves recognition as he,his daughter "Squaw" and her son "Archie" were far superior to many Stafford's from Ireland that have become more well known. No English bull or Pitbull blood was used to produce these dogs, they were pure-bred Stafford's.

"Belcher of Taunton" was a fine example of the "Flynn" strain of old type Staffords, bred down from the "Plymouth" dogs such as "Paddy","Max" and "Judy".The strain is very rare today and due to a diminishing gene pool an outcross to some well chosen "Psycho" bred stock has been undertaken with some good results. "Belcher" was a 35 Ib dog and stood at 16/17 ins.Belcher was matched into a Pit X Stafford and was picked up game at 1 hour 31 mins proving to be a deep game Stafford. He was bred back to his dam "Ch.Molly" to produce "Stripes" and "Gizmo" and another mating to "Cass of Plymouth" gave "Diablo" who proved to be game and "Kane" who quit to "Saab" a "Psycho" bred dog.

Bred in Ireland from pure K.C stock and also known as Boomerang,"Frazer of Ireland" along with a bitch known as Mandy of Dublin were shipped to Maurice Dann in England as the foundation stock that became known as the "Red Strain" dogs, due to most of them being a deep red colour. Frazer was regarded as one of the gamest Staffs ever owned by Mr.Dann and when bred to his Mandy bitch produced the deep game Ch.Red Warrior,AKA Dann's Choice.

"Ch.Red Warrior",also known as "Delaney's Starsky" in Ireland, was brought over to England by Maurice Dann just as his parents were and renamed "Dann's Choice". He was the winner of at least four matches, some say it was as many as seven and like his brother "The Great Bruce" was a very game Stafford. Like any good dog Red Warrior was able to pass on his desired qualities and sired Red Joe,Leo,Dann's Rocky,Lee's Bucko and Ginger amongst others.

"Beanie" was regarded very highly as both a performer and producer, born in N.Ireland she proved her gameness in a number of demanding tests before being matched twice and winning both, one against a Reid cross in 46 mins and the second in 1hour 38mins into a Patrick cross. Shortly after this Beanie was purchased by L&B kennels in England where she was bred twice, once to the Milo dog giving BeanieII and also to Jocko producing a litter that included Jocko Jr and Merlin. Some time after she was sent over to Europe on the yard of the FFB's where she remained. Here she was bred four times,to Barney,Pilot,Rickey and finally to her son Jack. There were game offspring in all four litters, proving her worth as a brood bitch. At least six of her progeny were matched, these were Rickey Jr(1xw),Jocko Jr(1xL picked up game to an APBT, a son of Ch.Neillson),Flynn(2xw),Sharon(1xw),Droopy(1xL)and Jack(1xw). There were others that were'nt matched but were proven game.Beanie can rightly be regarded as a modern great in Staffords.

"Battling Duchess" was said by her owner to be the best bitch he ever owned after buying her as a 3 year old from Bob Watt, both Duchess and her brother Battling Devil were renowned badger dogs as well as being show winners. They go back to Joe Mallen's Gentleman Jim,their sire Brindle Devil was sent over to Ireland from the North of England by Harry Payne to Willie Delaney of Dublin. These dogs are behind the "red strain" dogs such as Joe,Jim,Ruby and Jess.

"The Great Bruce" was one of the greats in the Irish badger trials, winning 15 certificates of gameness.I believe he was brother to Ch.Red Warrior, who was brought to England by M.Dann.Bruce also found his way to England in the 1980s,he was also known as "Wolf Island Warrior. The trials were conducted strictly within the law,and a veterinary surgeon was present at all times with all trials carried out in natural setts. The dog must stay at the badger for at least 5 minutes and must not bark while in contact with the badger. They were all governed by strictly enforced Irish Kennel Club rules at that time. Wheaton terriers,Glen of Imaal and kerry blues also competed in the trials along with the Stafford and a few English Bulls. Cross breeding of these dogs was also undertaken only of course,if both dog and bitch were proven game.

"Havoc" was a black/brindle dog of English k.c. breeding,he weighed around 40Ib and stood 19 ins at the shoulder. He was rolled into an APBT bitch,a daughter of "Dann's Gar".This bitch was regarded as one of the best around at the time and was giving "Havoc" a beating for 15 mins until the tables were turned and she was picked up at 20 mins, unable to continue. "Havoc" won several other private rolls before his life was taken in a road accident while still a young dog. However he was bred a few times and among the progeny were a male called "Gus" and "Piper" a bitch. "Havoc" was out of "Badge Boy" & "Lynn's Pet".
