Rescued Pitbulls Finally Up For Adoption

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) — Ten pitbulls rescued from a Jackson County dog fight operation back in March are ready for adoption.

It’s taken months for the dogs to recover, but now Hollywood Police say they’re all ready to find good homes.

In March, the scene of where the dogs were being kept was described by police as a dog concentration camp. Since their rescue, the dogs have had to undergo extensive treatment for their injuries, which ranged from vaccines to surgery.

Veterinarian Cassandra Garner treated all 10 of the dogs. ”There were two that were in worse shape, one of those had a completely dislocated carpus, where the bones of the wrist were completely dislocated from the long bone, and they all had, all eight, had swollen wrists.”

Now though, the dogs have recovered, and Hollywood Police say a judge gave the okay to have the dogs adopted out earlier this week. They say some are puppies and weren’t exposed to the fighting, so those dogs are okay to go to responsible people who meet the criteria. Most of the dogs though, are adults and spent their lives in that hostile environment. Officials say those dogs will need a special family to take them home.

Hollywood Police Chief Jason Hepler says even considering what the dogs went through, they are acting just like any other. As far as us, when we’ve been around the dogs, they’re really human friendly, just wanted to be petted, to be taken care of.”

Officials say those dogs will need to go to families without other dogs. Right now, they all are being housed at the Scottsboro Animal Shelter, waiting to start their new lives.

Officials say the dogs’ owners were forced to pay for the upkeep and care of the dogs in the months while they were recovering.
