Anybody know how Crenshaw's Rascal was actually bred? I don't believe he was Black Shine/Anny.

It came from known paper hangers and Crenshaw himself gave different pedigrees

The mistrust is great LOL Rascal good dog in every way. Bloodline still exists and there is no point in doubting his pedigree, no proof of all wasted effort.

Doubting pedigrees is as "American" as apple pies and Chevrolets.

Doubting a 40-50 year old pedigree is the same as chasing those same 40 year old dead dogs when breeding.

Not in so many words but once Mr. Hughes, the Mountain Man, said the only way to know how a dog was really bred is to win three or four or produce three or four winners. There will always be some sonofabitch standing in the corner that 'knows how he is really bred'.

There was a guy near hear that went by Thunderdome Kennels who passed recently. He knew how every dog was really bred. If he walked on the yards of FWK, BB, AGK, old guy, etc. etc, including me, on the ride home he always said two things right off the bat.

"Find a store and let's get a beer" which was immediately followed by "you know that dog ain't bred that way". He then went into a twenty minute diatribe on how, who and why the dog was not bred "that way".

    It became a running joke.

There are still dogmen who talk about Rascal’s pedigree to explain why and how his blood works. Maybe there’s no way to know how he was bred. But it isn’t totally irrelevant

It is relevant to that particular conversation but no longer relevant when breeding dogs.

Other than to say Rascal had these traits and this dog has those traits but there are far too many years in between for him to be relevant.

Those same traits are found in every other family as well. And rascal has been crossed with every other family too.

    Great conversation. Minimal impact.

    CRENSHAW'S CH. RASCAL 8xW 1XL POR
Champion Rascal was born in 1972 on the yard of Maurice Carver and was later owned by James Crenshaw. Rascal won 5 contracted ...matches, 6 off the chain and suffered just 1 lost, and that was his first. His first match was at 52lbs. against C. Sykes' Sampson, and took the count a 1:52. At this same match Ch. Honeybunch won her second match in :28. In 1974 Rascal met Wood's Snooty, again at 52lbs. and this close match ended in 1:57. For his third match and second win, he defeated Irish Jerry's Soldier in 1:30. For his championship, he won over Baxter's Booger in 1:16 at 48lbs., which turned out to be his ideal weight. He then had wins over Hughes' & Hick's Big Boy in 1:45 and Langston's Satan in 1:19.
Champion Rascal wasn't noted for possessing a devastating mouth, as some would have had many believe, but he was a very game dog as all of his matches went over the hour mark. he fought any style, but preferred to work the head. Not many dogs could put Rascal behind. Even in his loss to Sampson, Sampson died within an half an hour after the match.
His ability to produce is evident in the likes of Gr. Ch. Pedro, Ch. Rascal, Jr., Demon, Sugar, Bandit, Polly, and Krypto just to name a few of his offspring.. Rascal died at the age of 11 in 1983, but will be remembered as one of the best.

Great family of dogs. It crossed well with just about anything.

When i was just a kid there was a son of Pedro near here. He was a lot like Rascal, adapting to any style and doing just enough to outlast the other. If nothing else, he had time in the box.

Later Big Mike at Thunderdome Kennels had some really heavy Rascal stuff via Kimsey Woods. He bred it really tight and got a bunch of hard mouthed walk away type dogs.

Big Mike bred on of his "rascal" females to a Mims male once and had a little of complete package type dogs.

Junkyard Boys CH Masada was out of a daughter of GR CH Snakeman's Pedro, a first class dog and near clone of Crenshaw's Champion Rascal, despite CH. Hoss (Snooty) being his sire..

Big Mike's dogs looked a lot like Rascal and the dog you pictured. Black and white and heavy boned.

I won't say it was ever said Rascal could not bite but he never really bit one down and took him out early, thus the hours + times in the box. The fact he did not have a bunch of :20 minute wins makes his 8-9 + wins all the more impressive.

Big Mike selected on the mouth thru multiple breedings and in time he got it. A yard full of big boned, hard mouthed dogs. Thru that selection for mouth he ended up with a lot of dogs that would bite one down and walk away. But so it goes.

To the original poster, not knocking the family, as the family can still impact the next breeding. I was just saying that Rascal himself is so far part, just like Red Boy or Dibo or any great from the 50's, 60's or 70's, they are just a part of the conversation not the breeding equation.
