Pitbull puppy poops all over inside of patrol car after its owners are arrested on drug charges in Jackson County's Waterloo Township

While he took a couple from his patrol vehicle into the Jackson County Jail, Waterloo Township Police Chief Tom Cottrell left their puppy pit bull in the back seat. He planned to take it to a family member instead of the county animal shelter, where he said it would surely meet its demise.

Ever hear the expression “No good deed goes unpunished?” he asked Friday.

Cottrell returned to the car early Friday morning to find the “happy-go-lucky tigger impersonator” had bounded from the back seat into the front seat and all about, leaving trails of feces.

“There was poop mashed into the seats, smeared on the floor, rubbed into a coat and ever so creatively pressed into the buttons of the police radio,” Cottrell wrote in a statement. “It took a half hour for the car to become driveable — if you don’t mind holding your nose.”

The suspects, a man, 20, of Jackson and his girlfriend, 18, of Jackson had taken the dog with them on a trip to Waterloo Township, where the man went to deliver heroin, Cottrell said.

Police witnessed the transaction and arrested the pair. The man is to be charged with delivery of less than 50 grams of heroin. His girlfriend faces a possession of marijuana charge. They are to be arraigned Monday at the earliest.

Despite their puppy’s apparent lack of respect for police property, Cottrell got the dog a temporary home. He took it to stay in Michigan Center with a grandmother of the 18-year-old.

Its impact, however, may be long-lasting.

“Officers are still trying to get the smell out,” Cottrell wrote of the patrol car.
