Dodge City, KS -- In accordance with Dodge City Ordinance 3382, any person wishing to possess a pit bull or pit bull mix-type dog within the city limits after March 2 must register the dog with the Dodge City Animal Shelter before March 2. Dogs may be registered at the shelter between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays beginning Jan. 18.

The cost to register a dog is $50, payable when the registration occurs. The cost will be reduced if the dog is already microchipped and/or already possesses a current city dog tag. The owner must bring the dog to the Animal Shelter for registration and must present written proof of public liability insurance in a single-incident amount of not less than $100,000 for bodily injury to or death of any person or persons, or for damage to property owned by any person which may result from the ownership, keeping or maintenance of a pit bull.

In addition, the insurance must provide for medical pay coverage protection in an amount not less than $5,000 for any bodily injury sustained by any person which is caused by a pit bull dog owned by or in the care of the insured person.

At the time of registration, the dog will be microchipped, photographed and issued a numbered collar and city dog tag. The owner must provide the address where the dog will be kept. Facilities at that address will be inspected by Animal Control at a later time to ensure they conform with the requirements of the ordinance.

Any person with questions concerning this ordinance or who needs a copy of the confinement requirements for pit bulls may contact the Dodge City Animal Shelter.
