A local woman who rescues pit bulls says she's not surprised to hear about an attack early Monday morning. Two pit bulls broke into a barn in Springfield and took down a miniature horse.

Liesl Wilhardt of Luv-a-Bulls pit bull rescue says the dogs can be aggressive under certain circumstances.

"Pit bulls were originally bred to be fighting dogs. They have it in them to fight other dogs or other animals, so it is in their genetic makeup to be aggressive towards other animals," says Liesl Wilhardt.

Wilhardt says pit bulls are rarely aggressive against people, and stresses it's important for owners to be responsible and not let them run loose.
