Pit bulls don't exactly have the best reputation, so the Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance and the State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill in Cumberland County are out to change that.

The St. Pitty's Day Adoption event at Borders bookstore in Camp Hill was all about raising awareness about Pit bulls and getting rid of any myths that claim Pitbulls to be vicious pets.

Proud Pit bull owner Betty Harris says,"They go out of their way to please you, you couldn't imagine more love than you get from a Pitbull"

The event was hosted by HOPE (Hounds of Prison Education) a program where inmates care for and train homeless dogs.

In fact HOPE workers say statistics show that inmates who work in the program have a much lower recidivism rate.

They are less likely to return to prison once they have been released.

Program organizer Kelly McGinley says it's because, "You're building something in them that wasn't there before, an ability to communicate, a sense of empathy for people around them, the idea that you can work with someone even if you don't agree with everything that they do or say."
