My Dog's Nipples

Hey All,


Thanks for opening this thread. As some of you may read, I got a new one about a month ago. Kind of a rescue situation, I know her lines and all, but I am getting used to a real 'apbt'.

Anyhow, I went to have her fixed about a month ago and found out she was coming into her first heat. Not really what I wanted to deal with, but we've gotten through it all fine and dandy. She'll be spayed on Thursday.

Now, my question. Her vagina has finally went down to normal size and his not HUGE anymore. However, her nipples are still long and feel swollen. I KNOW she was not around any males to get knocked up, so I know she's not pregnant.

Should her nipples still be enlarged? In theory, shouldn't her nipples be as small as my other two males?

Any responses would be more than welcome! Thanks!

after my pup went through her first het, her nipples were larger for a shortwhile after. don't know if i'd use "swollen" to describe them, just more pronounced than before her heat.

they seemed to go down in a size a bit a few weeks after she had completely finished her cycle, but still more pronounced than before.

just my limited experience.

hopefully some of the more knowledgeable members can chime in.

Between two heats female can have phantom pregnancy which causes milk to produce (that's the reason for bigger nipples). Other signs are that the dog tries to "adopt" toys, other stuff, thinking that it's her pup. Her mood can be a bit down, she wil try to make her a nest, etc. But that happens in a bad case of phantom pregnancy, usualy it shows just with bigger nipples and it goes away in a few weeks.

 

So, from what you're all saying they'll go back down, right? I hate how they look. When I rub the base of them, it feels like they're 'swollen'. Anyone else out there got responses for me?

They will go back down, but a females nipples are never as small as a males.

They have different structures, ie mammary glands, that males just do not have.
Sorta the way human females are larger than human males.

Yeah they will go down, but as Dtwo said female's nipples are always bigger than males, especially with females that weren't spayed before the first heat. And do not rub, squeeze or touch her nipples untill it won't get back to normal or else she will produce more milk. My dog had a really bad case of phantom pregnancy, when she layed on her bed and stood up you could see small puddles of milk on the sheets. So yeah, spaying your dog will end all that

 

Hormones, baby.


They will go back down to normal size, or a near normal size, within a few weeks. Some dogs' bodies take longer to go back to normal than others. Just be patient.

 

Thanks Mia......I have never had a female dog before, let alone one that just got done with her first heat (she's about 14 months old)

They do not look like Mary Jane's dog (the one in the story on the other site) but they're bigger than normal.

Anyone else have input on this topic?

my girl has the same problem. only it's been a while since she's been in heat. she doesn't productemilk anymore but they are still huge!

 

does someone has a solution for her big tities. cause it doesn't look nice.
i already exercise with her. should i cut food as well?

 

i think theres a few lads on here would say epsom salts would sort it.....tho never had to try or use myself....:cool:

 

starve for 48 hours and then gently increase work. her body will consume that milk and drop of food will slow hormones
as peppa did say bath using epson salts too can work

 

Basically she just went through puberty. Don't be surprised if her boobies are never quite as tiny as they were before :p.

 

True, it depends on the dog. I have some dogs who have had litters and they go back to looking like my males. Some were never bred but have more pronounced nipples than the other dogs. Many times after a first heat the nipple will be more pronounced and they may shrink a bit they may not.

Now if they are filling up with milk from a false pregnancy that is different. What you are describing is normal, they may shrink a bit if you get her spayed.

Wow, it's been almost a month after my girl has gone out of her first heat and I too, was shocked when I noticed that the outer area of her nipples were kinda swollen... it made me really think :confused: ... but now I see that its not that uncommon... (my first female also)

 

You can with hold water except for twice a day. Let her drink all she can hold, but when she picks her head up, pick the water up. Do that only twice a day. I use campho-phenique to rub the nipples with. They will draw up nicely, but yes, hormones will prevail to some extent. I don't with hold food although some folks do. This will also draw up the bitch after the pups are weaned for a bitch that had pups.

 

Hell, my ole' ladies nipples are still big and swollen and I have only been pinching on them forever. What should I do?
