Monroe County Dog Fighting Ring Busted Up

A huge dog fighting ring is discovered near South Matubba Street and Calvert Lane in Aberdeen.

"See what I'm talking about. Keep the studded collar on them so when the dog bites their neck, they can't bite and kill them real quick. See those studded collars," said Cecil Cantrell, Sheriff.

After a tip and two weeks of surveillance, Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell and his deputies have uncovered what appears to be an elaborate dog fighting ring.

Investigators have recovered dog pens and even a canine skull.

"Its just not going to be permitted to fight dogs here in Monroe County. Its against the law and its just wrong to treat those animals that way," added Cantrell.

One of the animals found Wednesday was tied to a tree.

Although there have been no arrests in the ongoing investigation, Cantrell says, at least at that location, the killing of innocent animals has stopped.

"We have got that part stopped and we're working to bring the people to justice that are doing this. Pit bulls," said Cantrell.

The investigation is ongoing, the surviving dog was taken to an Amory Animal Shelter.
