FL: Miami-Dade police admit to losing confiscated dogf

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -Miami-Dade police confirm that a dog they confiscated after two parties could not prove ownership escaped from their station.

Rescue group volunteer Maria Linda said she was given her dog Molly, but Wayland Burch and his family disagreed, claiming that the dog was theirs.

After arguing over who the pit bull belonged to, they decided to call the police to handle it. Since neither party could prove ownership, Miami-Dade police took Molly into their custody Feb 16.

"The last I knew, they took her in the car, she was going to the Hammocks Police Department and she was to be kept at the station until Animal Services picked her up," Linda said.

After Molly was not picked up by Animal Services, she somehow managed to escape from the police department the same day as the confiscation.

"This is unbelievable that this could happen in a police department," Linda said.

"I'm hurt," Burch said. "That's part of the family."

In surveillance footage of a nearby park, the dog can be seen running away from the station.

"I was flabbergasted," said Linda. "How do you lose property from the police department?"

While Linda and the Burch family disagree on the ownership, they now agree that police made a big mistake.

"They treated this situation poorly," Burch said. "They used misjudgment."
