Man throws pit bull at St. Petersburg officers — twice

ST. PETERSBURG — Three officers were attacked in broad daylight Tuesday in two different incidents, police said.

One of the assailants used a car. The other used a dog, police said, throwing a pit bull terrier at officers not once, but twice.

"That's a new one," St. Petersburg police spokesman Bill Proffitt said of the incident involving the dog.

The first assault took place at 10:59 a.m. at 4114 Fairfield Ave. S. A woman recovering from surgery told police her troubled son refused to leave their home.

The son, Renaldo L. Gary, wouldn't budge from the doorway, police said. Then he struck Officer Michael Romano, ran outside and grabbed a family pet.

Gary threw the dog at Officer Romano, police said, yanked on the dog's chain, pulled the animal back to him and then thew it at the officer again.

Gary also hit Officer Norma Alanis, police said, and shook off two Taser blasts and a dose of pepper gas before the two officers handcuffed him.

The 27-year-old Gary was arrested on a charge of battery on a law enforcement officer. The pit bull terrier did not attack the officers.

The other attack took place at 11:21 a.m. while robbery squad supervisor Sgt. Al White searched for a burglary suspect in Childs Park. He was near the home of the suspect's mother, police said, when he tried to question 21-year-old Rayvorris Altuan Oliver.

But Oliver ran to a green Chevy Monte Carlo. White struggled with Oliver, police said, but the suspect was able to get into the driver's seat, turn the ignition key and put the car in reverse.

As the car backed up, the open door knocked the sergeant down, police said, leaving him with minor injuries.

Undercover officers later spotted Oliver speeding east on 18th Avenue S, running the red light at 34th Street, then crashing into a pickup at 31st Street, police said. Oliver ran from the scene but a police dog found him hiding in an empty home.

He was arrested on a charge of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana, burglary and violating his probation.

Oliver was being held without bail in the county jail Wednesday. Gary was also there being held in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Stupid irresponsible owner, good dog. That is how a pit bull should act - even when being tossed around by an abusive fool he did not lash out. This is why our dogs have the word "bomb proof" used to describe their tempers.
