Major speeding crackdown planned in North Carolina

RALEIGH, NC (WCMH) — Police won’t bother you if you’re only going 1mph over the speed limit, right? Apparently that’s not the case in North Carolina.

The state is launching a campaign titled ‘Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine’ that targets all speeders, not just those that are traveling above a 10mph perceived buffer zone above the posted limit.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says:

Many Americans believe they won’t be ticketed if they drive within a “buffer zone” above the posted speed limit. But now, law enforcement will be targeting and ticketing speeding drivers. When it comes to speeding: Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine – the posted speed limit IS THE LAW.

The state cites statistics that show that a road with a 65mph speed limit or more is twice as likely to result on a fatality as one with a 45 or 50mph speed limit.

Beginning Thursday, law enforcement says they will target and ticket anyone driving above the posted speed limit, even if it is just by a little bit.
