KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) -A Kerhsaw County man has pleaded guilty to 20 felony charges involving a dog fighting operation.

As part of an agreement with prosecutors, Burton Lushawn Mincey, pleaded guilty to 12 counts of ill treatment of animals and eight counts of breeding dogs for illegal purposes.

Mincey was arrested in January after Kershaw County Sheriff's deputies found nearly two dozen pit bulls who they say were abused and being trained for dog fighting at a facility on Baron DeKalb Road.

He was originally charged with 20 counts of ill treatment of animals, 20 counts of owning dogs for fighting, eight counts of breeding dogs for illegal purposes and one count of being present at a facility for dog fighting. As part of the plea agreement, he was sentenced to five years suspended after serving one year in prison, followed by two years of probation.

Kershaw County Animal Control seized the dogs.
