They were protesting the shelter's spay and neuter policy in front of the Municipal Building on North 7th Street.

At the KCK Shelter, new pet owners are given a certificate to come back at a later date and get their animal spayed or neutered. The problem, protesters say, is that few people ever come back. And that means animals in KCK are more likely to reproduce and be more aggressive.

FOX 4 checked with the Kansas City, Missouri Animal Shelter. It spays or neuters an animal before it heads home with a new owner.

The KCK Shelter has also been under fire recently for putting down all the pit bulls being brought in during an amnesty program. Pit bulls are illegal in Kansas City, Kansas. So far, FOX 4 has received no response from the KCK Shelter to the protesters.
