Indianapolis - Saved from a dog fighting ring only to be put to death - that's what happened to some of the pit bulls police confiscated earlier this month when they broke up a dog fighting ring on the city's west side.

It was a death sentence Friday morning for five pit bulls at Animal Care and Control of Indianapolis.

"They had to pay the ultimate price," said Adam Garrett, Animal Care and Control. "It's never easy. Our staff doesn't enjoy doing it. Nobody wanted to go back there and do that."

Investigators seized nine pit bulls earlier this month from a west side home where police say they busted one of the most elaborate dog fighting rings they've ever seen. Twenty-three people were arrested in connection with the case.

Four of the nine pit bulls weren't euthanized but they're not even at Animal Control anymore. They've been sent to rescues and other shelters to be rehabilitated and possibly adopted out.

"It's our hope to help as many of these guys as we can," said Garrett.

Dog Trainer and Behavioral Specialist Fernando Pastran hoped to rehabilitate the pit bulls, even the worst ones. He's offered to try. Pastron has worked with hundreds of animals, some involved in dog fighting.

"It's the only crime when the victim gets killed after the case is closed," he said.

Pastran is troubled five of the dogs were already euthanized, believing they all could have been saved and given a chance at rehabilitation.

"If that for some reason didn't work then we had to euthanize the dog, but at least we tried, you know?" he said.

But Animal Care and Control of Indianapolis says they didn't have a choice.

"They just weren't dogs that we felt comfortable releasing back out into the community," said Garrett.

No choice - just like the dogs who were part of the fighting ring and ended up dead because of it.

Anyone fighting dogs KNOWS the heat is on.
Anyone fighting dogs KNOWS what happens to the dogs if they are caught.

Therefore, they don't CARE about the DOGS.

How do you know that dog fighters don't care about their dogs? These are the ppl that are preserving this breed. Risking everything for it... The folks that support this law and push for stiffer penalties are the ones that seek the demise of the APBT, that is the agenda. Nothing more nothing less...

i agree right up till the end. i think there is a difference, or differences in each case. in this case? no, they did not care as they were beyond careless with what they were doing

as i said above, the people involved in this particular instance were careless...they had a pit in their attached garage for crying out loud. its about as smart as those fools in houston there that used the same spot for over a year- beyond careless!!!

It boils down to it is not a high profile case so therefore not a cash cow. That is why the dogs are dead.

Where are all the rescues, sanctuaries, and so forth lining up to save these dogs. All the saviors for all the Vick dogs. Not there because this case will not rake in the donations.

They do not care about the dogs. It is all about the money.

Look at that picture and tell me with a straight face that they care about those dogs.

Pieces of shit in my opinion who need to be killed. Not put on trial. Not convicted. Not jailed. Killed.

If a cops K9 German Maneater gets shot and beat up in the line of duty doing what he was bred to do and what he LOVES to do was that handler cruel to him? NO! because he was doing what he enjoys to do.

If a Beagle is out running rabbits and is accidentally shot by his owner does that mean the hunter was cruel to him or didnt love him?? NO! it doesnt.

If a Lab is retrieving ducks and is bitten by a moccasin does that mean the hunter was cruel or negligent to him and didnt care about him? NO because that dog was doing what he LOVED TO DO.

Well its the same way with pit dogs. Believe it or not these dog LOVE to fight, its what they were bred and created to do and they truly enjoy every second of it. How is letting a dog do what he wants to do more than anything else in this world cruel?? (dont worry ill wait).

And how do you know people who match their dogs dont care about them? Have you ever been with a dogman when he cries his eyes out because he couldnt save one of his dogs after a match? have you ever seen the amount of pride a dogman has in his dogs when they cross that scratch line with their tails wagging? have you seen how much time, money, blood, sweat, and tears a dogman will go through to patch his dog up and save it after a match? I'm guessing your answers to all of these questions will be no which just proves that you really dont have room to judge someone that you know nothing about.

Problem is, half the time, the pictures they post up with these news stories aren't even pictures of the dogs they 'rescued' so it is really impossible to know how they were really cared for.....

No the problem is certain peoples thought process, and comprehension level. Dog ain't yours, so what does it matter? People worry to much about what others are doing with their property rather than taking care of their own back yard. Even if those were the exact dogs confiscated how do you know they were not cared for?, and what does it matter to you?

it matters, although you might not realize it, it matters.

what i do has bearing on you
what you do reflects on me aswell
if you sit and think about it, you will see the point.

i do agree to an extent, these folks were dickheads for gettin caught in the first place. a pit in the garage? c'mon, it aint rocket science for these folks to know that wasnt the brightest idea.
these folks along with all the others gettin raided & endin up on the news affects ALL OF US at the end of the day.:(

OK, maybe I should reword what I said....It shouldn't matter....it shouldn't be anyone's business what one does with their property, and what one does should not reflect on a group as a whole...to bad most people are to stupid to see this. Still the question remains how does that poster know that those dogs were not well cared for? It unfortunately does matter, but it really shouldn't. Fair enough, lol.
