San Mateo, CA -- In response to the fatal pit bull attack in San Francisco last week, the Peninsula Humane Society is offering to spay and neuter pit bulls for free and pay the owners $10.

"Although we're not sure how we will fund this change in service, we believe that the cost is in fact a small price to guarantee that a number of pit bulls will not reproduce and will be less likely to act aggressively," PHS/SPCA President Ken White said.

Typically, PHS charges from $65 to $120 for the procedures, depending on the weight of the dog. The PHS Spay and Neuter clinic performs an average of 22 procedures a day. According to the Association for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals, 95 percent of dogs involved in attacks aren't neutered, and 70 percent of those dogs are males.

PHS is offering a free presentation Thursday night, "Understanding Pit Bulls." It is aimed at educating pit bull owners, potential owners, dog-walkers, pet-sitters, and people who live in neighborhoods with pit bulls.

The program is 6:30 p.m. the Humane Society, 12 Airport Blvd., in San Mateo. PHS also offers periodic workshops about animal safety including, "Dog Safety for Children."

Under state law, all animals turned into shelters must be spayed or neutered. Some pit bulls are available for adoption through PHS, but only after an extensive evaluation, an in-home check and training classes for potential owners.

For more information or to make an appointment to have an animal spayed or neutered, call PHS at (650) 340-7025.

Kinda makes ya wonder if the presentation is a bunch of BS or factual...;) If factual it would most likely be very helpful....of course how often is our breed painted in a truthful, positive light?...
