genetics question

ok, i watched the movie RAY last night, and it got me thinking. we have talked about whether the male or the female puts more of herself into the pups, and we found that a scientific study on dogs determines that yes the female does, myself being "in the family way" as well lol i am curious if anyone knows which dog determines the sex of the pups, i know that in humans it is supposed to be the male, and i am wondering if this is true in dogs as well.

what brought this on is in the movie RAY, he is a heroin addict and each time his wife gets preg and has a baby there is nothing wrong with it. so i was wondering just HOW MUCH does a man or male dog put into a baby or a puppy. it doesnt seem like a whole lot.

maybe its a stupid question, but it made me think for a while last night, thought you all might wonder as well.:o

I am not sure if this is known. There have been studies that have "shown" if bred earlier in the heat cycle bitches are more likely to deliver pups of a certain sex, and if bred later purportedly she will deliver pups of the opposite sex.
I unsure how much of this I personally believe.

I have done progesterone testing on one bitch...determined best day to breed, and the bitch was stuck once with a resulting litter of 8 pups---5 males and 3 females.
I am going soon ( in the next 2 months) to this same specialist to pull semen off a dog to save and I will ask the guy if he know the answer to this or at least has an educated opinion.

Well...re:drug use it will only affect the outcome of the infant if it actually damages his semen...with a woman it is much different because many drugs cross the placenta and therefore have a much greater impact.

Not a stupid question at all, but I am not sure if anyone has all the answers on that !

On another note, I just bought the DVD, "Ray", but I haven't had a chance to watch it as yet...is it as great as all the hype? I have really been looking forward to watching it !

 

yes it is an awesome movie. i admire him for his strength and his belief in what he did. even though he became an addict, he still never gave up, and when he went to get clean, he stayed clean. an excellent man in my opinion. and his music is good too....lol it was a sad day for r&b when he passed away last year.

I KNOW who Ray Charles is and I am confident of the fact that Jaime Foxx will win for that role. I was talking about the genetics information stating that the female adds more to the breeding that the male.

 

oh...lol my bad... Yeh Jaime should win an award for that.

 

All this talk about the movie is killing me...been wanting to see it for a while now.

If the influence you mention ( in your discussion about male and female strengths/potency) is,
1. the likeness of the pups to either the mother or father?

Then the question becomes not one of mother and father but a question of the strength or dominance behind the dam and sire's genetics.
As you know, in genetics the sire and dam put in 50% each, but the heritage behind each determines the outcome of the progeny.
This breed is known for many things, but to understand the 'real' essence of this unusual dog, one has to realize that this breed is set apart by it's heritage. One of the rare breeds that has been kept 'pure' within it's family genetics.

Most gamedogs come from genetics that have been inbred, linebred or family bred, therefore the likeness of the offspring are no surprise if one has spent a number of years studying the breed.
Each family within this breed carries with it, extremely strong traits and characteristics that are recogniseable to the seasoned eye, and these can be used as visual guidelines as to the dominance of the particular lines within the family.
In short, if the sire is from an inbred family and is bred to a dam that is from no particular family(scatterbred) then the pups may not be exactly like him, BUT will resemble the sires family, and if the dam has any dogs in her heritage that link with the sires then some of those particular genetics will come through, BUT not necessarily genetics that display themselves.
The breeding of these dogs is very involved as you know, and the breeders experience with different lines over the years can not be short cut, each time we lose an old school dogman, we lose a huge chunk of history and wisdom.
