What about Jersey Joe Walcott or Ezzard Charles in that era. Most that fought the rock were never heard from again.

Hagler is my all time favorite. If you want to go old school add in Willie Pep, Benny Leonard, and Sugar Ray Robinson. I would put Duran and Julio Cesar Chavez in there too. I see some people put Hearns on their list.... Here is a classic!

And the reason buster won was cuz he wasnt affraid of tyson! Hw knew what type of fighter mike was and knew if he could drag it past 3 rounds he could win the fight. So he got in there n boxed em!

If you really want to go old school look up Harry Greb, probably one of the best who ever lived.

  5. Re: BOXING yesterday & today

I liked Hagler a lot. I never thought he was great after the wars he had with Vito Antefermo who couldn't break a grape on his best day.

The Hearns fight was probably one of his best performances. Hated to see Tommy put on queer street.

Sometimes, your just the better man on the given day. Lets just say the cards fell right for him that night. THe Robin Givens stuff didn't help Mike's performance any.

Did you see Buster Holyfield? Looked like a dive to me.

for me,my favourite fighters are rarely the best.

I can't see many of the old greats beating Lennox Lewis (over 12 rounds under modern rules) for example, but he was one of the most boring fighters i can think of.
same with Mayweather and a lot of eastern eurpean fighters.

probably the best fight i've seen is

Don't get confused because Lennoz was bigger then most heavyweights. There were huge heavywieghts that got knocked out as well. Lennox Lewis had a glass jaw. Can give you about 6 off the top of my head that would have beat Lennox. Mike Tyson in his prime being one. Another that would have beat the hell out of him was Sonny Listen.

Duran whatever. folks would go back into him with no problem. he could get top fighters. everyone ducked the hawk like aids. ray lenard used him as a sparring partner a few rounds. got his ass whooped & was called out on national TV & ran like the plague. AP was a killer had wind & was game to the core. they went 15 back & he fought like a mexican would take everything just to get one in.

He was also one that was thought to be a huge roid head. Panama Lewis was his trainer. Remember the "Mix" he got during the Arquello fight? That being said. He was tough and game to the bone. To beat a fighter like Arquello, says a lot about him. He did it twice.

was " said by who" the promoter of AA ? because nobody else said it. they were hooked agin & you know how that ended. he didn't need nothing to beat AA. cocaine he had issues with but so didn't AA. Yes.Remember the interview with someone. Actually, I thought it made AA look real weak. I loved AA and was saddened to see AP do what he did. I felt the same way when Livingston Bramble(PI COnnection) did it to Ray Mancini.

jab jab grab, until he wears them down then he opens up a bit and stops them both imo.

all conjecture now but even allowing for his lack of chin i think he'd beat most of the old greats under modern rules.

When i've finished putting this time machine together i'll give you 4/1 on Liston vs Lewis.

  19. Re: BOXING yesterday & today

Watch Sonny when he was not taking dives. Watch him against the smaller Floyd Patterson. They didn't call him the Bear for nothing. He was no Primo Carnero either. He could hit.

Lets see. Joe Foreman in his prime. Mike Tyson in his prime. Riddick Bowe in his prime. Larry Holmes. Ernie SHavers.
