NJ: Authorities seeking help after pit bull is dumped in Eatontown in horrific condition

EATONTOWN – Authorities are making a plea for the public to come forward with any information about a neglected 1-year-old Pit Bull, Danny, that was dumped extremely emaciated and covered in mange at a borough apartment complex earlier this month.

Victor “Buddy” Amato, chief law enforcement officer for the Monmouth County SPCA, said his agency is following up on a few leads, but still needs information from the public. Amato is asking anyone who may recognize the dog or know of someone who had a dog like Danny, but no longer has it, to come forward with any information that may help the case.

“We’re at a standstill right now as far as that goes,” Amato said. “The dog itself is doing better and better everyday.”

The SPCA and the Humane Society of the United States have put up a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for dumping Danny, authorities said.

Dr. Nicole Feddersen, who is treating Danny for a skin condition and emaciation at the MCSPCA, said Danny has gained about four pounds since he was brought in and is making progress, but is still underweight.

It is expected to take several months for Danny to recover, Feddersen said.

Feddersen said when Danny goes outside, he likes to be carried and does not like the cold weather. Danny was seen exploring a room at the MCSPCA on Thursday morning, sniffing cabinets and even licking one of his caretakers.

“I never heard him bark until we didn’t put a big comfy comforter in there [his cage] or a big bed and that’s when we found that he barked,” Feddersen said. “Then when we put the comforter in there, he stopped barking.”

Danny also has a bed and his favorite toy duck in his cage, which authorities said was donated.

There are a handful of caretakers Danny has developed a trust with, Feddersen said, including Joanne Risa, Russ Horn and Deann Bowen.

Horn said they are slowly introducing Danny to more people in order to get him acclimated with new faces.

Danny was dumped in "horrific condition" at the Stony Hill apartments in Eatontown on Jan. 6, authorities said.

MCSPCA Detective Sgt. William Hyer has said the Eatontown police found Danny in the area of four dumpsters when a witness saw the dog and a white four-door car and reported it to authorities. Another witness has since told authorities they saw a white, four-door Acura acting suspicious around the same time Danny was dumped.
