Attack On Van Was Planned, USPCA Claims

Belfast, Ireland -- The USPCA said last night it believed an attack on one of its vehicles had been carefully orchestrated because the charity had spoken out about illegal dog-fighting in Belfast.

Stephen Philpott said a gang of up to 50 youths had singled out the vehicle when it was called to Ballybeen on Monday evening to rescue goats which were roaming the estate.

The USPCA van came under stone attack, causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

Frankie Gallagher, an independent councillor for the area, said residents were determined to show their support for the charity and had been collecting money yesterday towards the van's repairs.

Mr Philpott said he believed the USPCA had been "singled out" because he had spoken on Radio Ulster's Stephen Nolan show last week about illegal dog-fighting and that "certain remarks" had upset those involved in the brutal activity.

"I am concerned that, in light of recent comments, we have been attacked like this. I'm finding it hard to accept that we weren't singled out for a reason," said Mr Philpott.

He said the charity would be forced to review its policy regarding call-outs in that area.
