THE man who appeared in court yesterday charged with two counts of animal cruelty asked to be "left alone" as he left Grimsby Magistrates' Court for London to "protect himself" from public outrage.
Jonathan Bloomfield, 36, of Stanley Street, Grimsby, appeared before magistrates yesterday after neighbour, Michael Currie, 23, posted a video on facebook, which appeared to show him beating his white Staffordshire bull terrier, Butch, outside the door of his home.

PUBLIC OUTRAGE: How the Telegraph reported the story yesterday.

    • <LI class=selected>•

As reported, crowds gathered outside a house in Stanley Street, Grimsby, on Tuesday, where a window was smashed and a man allegedly assaulted after the video went viral.
Butch is now being cared for by the RSPCA and no longer belongs to Bloomfield.
The charges were read out as: Failing to protect the animal from pain, suffering, neglect and disease and causing unnecessary suffering to the dog by hitting it with object, punching and kicking it.
As he left the court he said to the Grimsby Telegraph "could you leave me alone please" and walked on with his head down and hands in the pockets of his jeans.
Standing handcuffed in the dock and wearing a blue hoodie, Bloomfield applied for bail on the condition he would live with his mother in Owen Way, London, until his next court appearance. Both defence and prosecution agreed it was for his own safety.
The abuse, which is thought to have taken place between Friday, September 9, and Tuesday, October 10, caused such public outrage it caught the attention of the national and international press.
The court heard how one of the mob assaulted Bloomfield and his window was smashed.
Prosecuting, Dennis Aisthorpe, said: "The defendant was in control of the dog, Butch. The social networking site was the source of ill feeling towards the defendant by members of the local community. He was actually assaulted by a member of the public he didn't know."
The video footage and subsequent facebook posts are currently being examined by Humberside Police and an investigation into whether the disorder in Stanley Street was a direct result of the video or whether people took the matter into their own hands is under way.
Defending Bloomfield, Steven Freestone, said: "I am grateful for these conditions, clearly for the defendant's own welfare. He and his property have been attacked as a result of this footage being put on the internet.
"As far as the dog is concerned, the defendant has provided a transfer of ownership to the RSPCA, so there is no risk of the dog coming to any harm from this day on."
Bloomfield was granted bail by magistrates but was ordered to leave for London immediately and not to enter North East Lincolnshire until his next court appearance on Thursday, November 10.
