DAYTON -- Animal control officers need your help tracking down the person who starved a dog to death and then dumped its body near railroad tracks on Homestead Avenue in Dayton.

Officers say since it's been so cold, it's hard to tell how long the dog has been dead. But they are sure she had been starved and then dumped at the back of some property belonging to Midwest Iron and Metal. A security guard for the company found a doghouse with a dead pit bull inside Monday. The industrial property sits on a dead-end road.

"It's a convenient location for someone who wants to abandon an animal and go undetected," said Animal Resource Center Director Mark Kumpf. "Unfortunately, this dog looks like it's been starved for a period of time. It's extremely malnourished."

Kumpf hopes someone recognizes the dog so officers can track down the owner. The dog is a brindle and white female pit bull wearing a bright red harness with a large silver chain attached.

If you have any information call the Animal Resource Center at 937-898-4457.

    Earlier coverage:

DAYTON -- A Dayton security guard finds a starved dog dumped at the back of an industrial property on Homestead Road. A worker at Midwest Iron and Metal found the dead pit bull and a dog house abandoned near the back of the property Monday.

Animal Resource Center officers say the dog had been starved, her ribs were very prominent. Right now there aren't any suspects. No one saw it happen, and the pit bull didn't have any tags or a microchip.

The dog was wearing a bright red, newer harness with a huge chain attached. ARC is hoping someone recognizes it. In the 911 call, the security guard told dispatchers the dog was most likely dumped sometime between Saturday night and Monday morning.

The dog is a brindle and white pit bull. If you have any information about the dog's owner or who may have dumped the dog call the Animal Resource Center.
