Is there anything I can spread out around the spots to cut down on mud build up? I know someone mentioned rock salt? Does it actually work and will it harm the hounds?

  7. Hey guys. I'm new both to the forum and really the bulldog scene as a whole but I've been reading and learning alot from the posts since I brought home my pup Bo 6 months ago. His sire is a APBT-Am Bulldog mix and his dam is a blue pitbull. At about 7 months he is around 55lbs and full of energy. Currently I have him on a chainspot that has served me well while he was a smaller pup but I'm upgrading all the hardware this wknd due to his increased size and activity. I've got Stillwater collars and hardware to use, but I have not decided if I need to upgrade to an axle for the chain. Right now I've got about a 30" galvanized pipe driven into the ground with the chain/swivel attached to a clevis that rotates around the pipe. The cap is secured on very tightly with loctite and pipe wrench, and keeps the clevis from slipping off-but still free spinning around pole.

I know the axle setup is the most popular and seems most reliable so I had always planned on doing it that way once my pup got stronger. (NOW) But, I was curious if anyone had ever tried the method I'm currently using and if it would serve me just as well. Thanks

are you looking for the chainspot to be permanent?? get the 3 1/2 to 4 ft black steel round stakes, get about 5 to 8 links of THICK (1/2") galvonized chain, weld 2 or 3 of those links to the stake, drive that whole stake into the ground leaving only a few chainlinks exposed, get your stretch of chain your going to use and attach that chain to the big links using a laplink.....the ground will work as a swivel on that end........than using another lap link attach a swivel to the other end of your chain follwed by yet another laplink, that will be connecting to the collar........but this must be for a permanent set up, cuz once that post is in there.....it aint commin out! ......... ill post pictures later......

  9. LWG-
Sounds pretty stout...thanks for the suggestion. Yes it needs to be permanant due to my yard not being fenced in currently and piece of mind is crucial. I just want a stout chainspot and I was curious if the axle was the end all be all or if other anchoring methods were avail too. I'll try to put up a pic as well.

No...the stake is more secure, ive pulled an axle outta the ground (eventhought I was a hard task)...the stake is there to stay..... but because the few big links of chain are underground your gonna want to check your hardware more often........eventhought it will be a LONG time before it starts to corrode......

  11. my opinion is Im against the chaining of dogs having something constantly hanging from a dogs neck is just wrong to me I understand people keep their dogs outside A good yard setup to me would be using kennels because then the dog won't have a chain always on his or her neck the only time I use a chain is when I bathe my dog to keep her from running away

Believe or not...dogs prefer chains & cable set-ups over kennels...Just ask them, they'll tell you...

  13. Cable setups im ok with chains I am not I honestly believe all dogs should be inside a dog sitting outside in storms and rain and the hot and cold is sad to me whether they have shelter or not, My dogs live inside the air conditioned house with me

So, how would you manage ten dogs inside who despise each other? Energy level is over the edge, store bought kennels don't hold them?

There is nothing wrong with a proper set up that is outside, when it's done responsibly. Chains are tools to properly contain dogs.

Don't know him personally, but the information he puts out on our breed is priceless.

I'm not going to waste much time on you, I'll just say you have no clue wtf you're talking about. Seriously, NONE.

chainspots IMO are more humane then kennels.
    1. i cant just go walk up to a kennel to show my dog affection...a chainspot, you can.
    2. a 10 x 10 kennel has as much sq ft as a 5 ft chain., most dogs (mine anyways) are on atleast 10 ft.
    3. if you notice bulldogs in a kennel, pout at the entrance gate, dogs on chains are content & happier in nature.
    4. if you notice, dogs in kennels when released, bolt out the kennel and run like theyve never seen freedom. chained dogs, just want to be next to you.
    5. shoveling shit and exiting a kennel is a lot more harder to keep dog contained and hold a shovel while leaving kennel. chainspot you just walk right up to shit shovel and go to next spot.
    6. do we even need to compare securities?

point being, it is fairly obvious how little you know proper containment and management of this breed to be making judgements on others for being responsible and keeping theyre dogs contained. your nothing more than a pet owner, and because of that you practices are fine (house couch potato and such) but dont come down on folks who work/show theyre dogs and naturally have more than one, because quite frankly, those folks are prolly doing more than you have ever thought of, done or ever will do for this breed.
