Ok my mills have no space in between the the slats. toes cant get through but if this works fine for you.. i have nothing to comment, was just asking myself. looks really decent. what kind of bearings did you use?

I went with the steel wheels so they have built in bearings...I did this so i could hear the mill running when working the yard.

TopBox great job there, but as someone pointed out the gaps in the slats, won't you get alot of slat rock? which is bad for the dogs wrist. Ive made the odd mill myself and found this out the hard way.

Damn near all the older slats are like that tho, look at the RRC mills.

Slat rock?...I dont understand. I built it this way from seeing one of the top bull doggers in the worlds mill. There is alittle less than a 1/2 inch bewteen the slats.

slat rock is when the slat dips before it rides up on the next wheel....if the space between the peak of two wheels is greater than the width of the slats themselves....the mill will have slat rock....the gaps between the slats needs to be the bare minimum to keep them from touching one another as the roll over the end wheels....this mill looks pretty good...the gap between the slats may do some toe nail damage....looks nice....US1

1/4 inch to 1/2 an inch is perfect slim12. having the slats too close together can be problematic for many reasons.

Well it doesnt Slat rock and the distance between the slats seem to be working just fine. I 45ed the edges of the slats and left 1/2 inch so i wouldnt cause and injury on the nails or pads....if that happens ill need find a new blood line with out 3 inch nails!

The only way I can see a dog can pulling a nail out is if the dogs feet go on to the main end wheels before the belt has levelled out. Never in 30 yrs had a dog pull a nail on a mill.. Anyway as long as your happy that all that counts!

Plus slats need a little space for the wood's natural expansion and contraction

it is not that the gap will cause the toe nail to get pinched...when the toe nail goes between the slat and it is at a high rate of speed when the dog lifts his foot for the next step....the next slat is coming..and it will drag the nail before the nail clears it....and if the slat 'rocks' between the wheels it will take that much longer for the paw to clear....the first mill i built looked amazingly similar to yours.(late 90's)....i used 3/4" slats...and spaced them too far....R. Curios (Stage II mills) pointed these things out....after running the dog on the mill look at his nails...there will be scratch and scuff marks on the tops of his nails....moreso on the fronts than the backs....
the mill looks good....it looks like it will work just fine....not trying to slight the work...just dropping a little knowledge that was dropped on me by one of the best mill makers ever....best of luck with your mills....US1

Ive made a few mills now for other people and I going to build some more. If anyone is interested let me know. I havent posted the new model mills ive been building cause I want to get a patient on them. I will say this.... Its a carpet mill that runs like a slat but can be set to add strength like a carpet when needed. Free spinning carpet with adjustable drag! Its metal framed just like my slat and able to be shipped fed ex.
