BSL? good or bad?

Ok so as some as you may know my country [Australia] has varying levels of bsl from very bad to what i class as managable.

As a whole i think that bsl is bad and i wish it were abolished.

But here there is and has been for a while two sides to bsl that i can see.
We all know what it is generally so no need to explain that.

The dogs that are banned for importation here besides the APBT are here[if they are here at all:D] are in small enough numbers that no one even knows what they are so they wouldnt know one if it attacked them.

Bsl has done for some time now created a black market for the dogs, and we have plenty of people selling pups at inflated prices and anywhere between $1000 upto $2000 per pup, i have seen plenty of late from the same person [im sure] and they are all $1800 no "time wasters" and the price is firm.
These peddlers are [apparently] selling from a state where it is legal to sell them so they are in the clear.
So as well as lining peddlers pockets they are preventing people from owning the breed of their choice.

If BSL was abolished it would obviously open up the "market" which can go in the direction of more BYB with poor breeding practices, or it may leave a few people a little less stressed depending on where they live.

On speaking to an aquaintance who has been in the breed for twice as long as i, over a few beers the subject came up at why it is that i am a member of a local Anti BSL group.
    When i explained my reasonings[the obvious] he came at me with this;

"I couldnt give a rats arse about anylaw that prevents dickheads from owning bulldogs"

he went on to tell me that in regard to owners like us, bsl will make little to no difference in the long run.
"No matter what anyone says i will allways own these dogs as will many other fanciers who are the same opinion"

"on the downside the furmummie types will have to change breeds [bad for them] but on the good side the only people left with the dogs are going to be the people who realy want the best thing for the dogs and the history, in return bringing up a better standard overal for the number of dogs there are"

So pretty much his opinion is that BSL will only bring good things for the people who want them the most and have the breeds best interests at hand, and eventually the peddlers will not be able to sell pups off backyard stock with some papers to the customers who are buying the dogs at that price now because they are "badass" and against the law.
Those same people will move onto a different breed due to the fact it will eventually be too hard to own them in suburbia.

SO? what do you all think??

I agree there are a few benefits a lot of ppl I know stay away from the breed now because of BSL where as anyone serious is still getting what they want. Alot of peddlers also avoid them because of this. But end of the day I still don't support it..never bad to look at glasses half full though.

good post junkyard......I can agree with the open fact that it can not necessarily benefit us for having bsl breathing, but towards the peddlers and the less devoted it can certainly be a benefit in that perspective. Other then that screw bsl and it's dedication of pissy ways to step into our lives and take over/control.

It's like smokers....regardless of all the crap surrounding the tobacco industry and the uprising price of smokes, you and I both know it might brighten the light for a good amount of souls who can finally call it quits but they will always be around for the true smokers to have no matter the price in $ and the price of your life.

Now off to another damn day at the work office

bsl is a terrible thing. you have to realie there are pros and cons to EVERY situation. Anytime the government takes away my ability to CHOOSE i'm against it

im just gettin in the conversation, when i said u have to realize i wasnt talkin specifically to you junkyard. I liked your post, simply saying that the cons of bsl outway the pros.

I agree the cons outweigh the pros! However it would be nice to push all the pet owners that let there dogs turn into a lump and think in a real dog you can train out DA and all that shit. Also people calling mutts pit bulls over to another breed would def help the statistics imop, all in all i say it would hurt the cause more though?

The "good point" of BSL listed was that the real breed lovers will continue to have their dogs. Great. Now how are they going to provide medical care and socialization when having the dog is illegal and people can easily report the owner and have the dog confiscated and euthanized?

In my personal experience in the northern US, when BSL is passed you end up with unsavory types paying big money to get a banned breed dog. You know, the kind of people you wouldn't trust with a dog, who have no clue about raising and caring for a dog and who just want it because its in fashion to have an illegal badass dog.

Then you have a buncha fucktards looking to make money breeding anything that even looks like the banned breed so they can get in on the action and make a profit.

In addition, you have good people who deserve a good dog unable to own one or who are forced to hide it in their basement until they can move.

And my right to own what I choose is taken away.

Yeah, BSL is bad. Very, very bad.

BSL we just stopped it in the Netherland. It was a terrible thing. Dogs were taking of the houses and killed only for the way they looked.
The people were afraid to go for a walk with there dogs. I payed for my self a lot of money to get a pedegree from the FCI to be save with my dog.
Now it is stopped you can walk with your dog.

The only thing that is bad news after finishing the BSL is that there are a lot of pedlers who only think about money ad say everey breed is a pitbull and the people ho buy them don't know hat they buy and now our shelters are running full whit these dogs because people bought them in a impulse.

Fuck BSL or anything else that restricts what kind of domesticated pets you can or can't own.

with that being said there is obviously REAL problems that need to be addressed some how. BSL is not the answer to anything but obviously things like the pitbull population and 8 out of 10 dogs put to sleep being that type of dog only fuels BSL and other things like it.

Not from an HSUS/Peta standpoint, but from like a city councils view. What do you do when you have nothing but pitbull type dogs running free in the streets with no shelter food water and causing problems? These people are obviously not experts or have any kind of experience with these kinds of situations so they introduce BSL thinking it will curb the problem.

i know what you mean. the problem is I can't think of a solution. But bsl isnt helpin one bit, i wish the anti-bsl organizations stood a chance against the hsus and peta. they have been more than exposed and it hasnt slowed them down at all...
