Well IMO, It would be fair to say if John R. Colby crossed his old Colby lineage into a another lineage of his choice, Put his name as the breeder, ect. It would certainly be fair to say they were bred by John R. Colby. The way I have understood creating your own lineage, they would need to be continuously bread for 7 generations. Going back to J.P. Colby his bulldogs were bred in the pit for the pit He started with a few different lineages. Burk, Gashouse, ect . He put his name as the owner and breder, and Yes they became known as the Colby dogs. That is a good question, I am sure that a few very knowledgeable folks here on gamedog, will have some honest input.

As crazy horse pointed out in his post, the Colby line has been inbred for 70 year's. If John R Colby himself decided to cross his pure Colby hounds into a different family like Eli, put his name on it as the breeder,it would be a colby, Eli cross. But if he kept breeding for 7 generations, it certainly could be called a Colby dog.

Name of breeder doesn't change. You can say how the dog is bred 50/50 Colby / Eli ,but it's still a Colby dog because it was bred by Colby.Same way with any other breeder.
