Which do you prefer? Which would be best for different applications? Just looking over pedigrees and the question came up.

Most competitors could give a shit, and will look past a scattered pedigree on a good dog. Breeders on the other hand, they like a well bred dog and will even look past a dogs poor ability if it's got a good ped.
That said, a well bred, good performer is what everyone really wants.

Good dogs are just that, good dogs, Good dogs that are good producers also are just that, Good dogs who in return produce good dogs. Papers are nothing more than a guidline or tool a breeder can use. There is no one right way nor one wrong way to breed dogs. Not mutch if anything in these dogs is black and white.

The general Idea is to linebreed on solid bulldogs , to inbreed in order to bring all the positive and negative traits within a family to the top(this is usaly when someone is not familure with the family) if one has ben with the family for some time and knows the blood for both its good and bad traits, Inbreeding may be used to "lock in" (so to speek) , good traits. Or to preserve and keep the blood straight. Outcrosses are done to produce vigor or to bring in some genetic variety once the family starts to become stale or regress from too mutch line breeding and or inbreeding.

I prefer at least no less than a 39 way cross.

  14. A 39 way cross is ok but the problem is you get some domination there. See, you're crossing the 20-way to the 19-way to get that 39-way so you will always get a little dominance in your breedings.
We've been experimenting with a new engineered 40-way cross that doesn't show any dominance by either side. We are getting all sorts of stuff in the litters but after culling the monkeys and rattle snakes we got a few tiger mouf bulldogs that have big teef.

They say the scatterbred dogs are better all around performers but the well bred will produce better

scaterbred dogs are worthless they may be good performers but they can never reproduce. and there is no point to use a scaterbred dog when line bred dogs and out crossed dogs perform just as well.

So, with talking line breeding, how tight does the line have to be before it's considered line bred vs scatterbred? How far back into the ped should you look to determine this?

No matter how well a dog is bred be it inbred or outcrossed it is a tool you have and its up to you to put the work in with the animal. All dogs should be bred on their own merit, as working dogs come from working dogs. As long as you know that the dogs in the first three geneations top and bottom of a pedigree are honest working dogs, then your in with a chance. If your going to be a breeder you still have to test the dogs (weightpull) and bitches hard !!! Or else your not going to see how they are and whether or not you like what you see or whether something is lacking and you need to add and so on. JMO
