Bad smell & excessive gas..?

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by topmodel662, Apr 21, 2010.

  1. Re: Bad smell & excessive gas..?

"SHE" crates them because they go in the house.. ;) They're getting better. They don't go in the kennel. And it's bigger than my queen size bed, so they're by no means "cooped up".. I just can't decipher if they are supposed to smell this bad & pass gas ALL THE TIME, and louder than a human..

if i were in your shoes, i would half the normal feed, or devide the normal feed into spaced out sessions. i have no knowledge of the brands mentioned, but at 9 months old, i would ensure i fed dry kibbles, and small kibbles at that .the type designed for younger dogs and puppys is fine until they are 18months old. if this doesnt work i would strip the diet down to simple rice and chicken in small quantities . if still no success , i would consult i vet . god luck to you and your dogs

TigerLines.. I use the Diamond Puppy small kibble, in two feedings a day. What quantity & amount would you sggest for rice & chicken.. and is the chicken raw, and do you feed the bones?? Thanks for the response!

Did they really tell you the dog was a kobey/gatormouf?
Like I said its probably the anal glands here i copied and pasted this for you:

OK, my dog didn't roll in anything, and did not get sprayed by a skunk. What else could it be?

Here are just a few possible smell-producing medical problems:
    • Breath - some diseases, like kidney failure and Diabetes, can cause a change in breath.
    • Diseased teeth and gums - dental disease and infected gums can produce a very foul odor. Additionally, a sore mouth may cause increased drooling. The malodorous saliva can coat the fur, furniture, etc., and you may not recognize that this is originating in the mouth.
    • Infected ears - bacterially infected ears are often extremely smelling. A vet can usually smell these ones while they are still in the waiting room. Your dog will usually be scratching or shaking the head, but not always. A bath may make ears worse if water is trapped in the ear canal.
    • Flatulence - is the odor on your dog, or from your dog? Flatulence, or "gas" may indicate a dietary or intestinal problem. Some flatulence is normal, but if this is regularly occurring, please see your veterinarian.
    • Anal glands/sacs - this is perhaps the most common cause of doggie odor that won't go away. Anal sacs are two small scent-sacs in the area of the anus. These are a type of "marking" glands. When a dog has a bowel movement, these sacs are normally squeeze, and a very smelly, oily secretion is released with the feces. If these sacs become infected or impacted (thicker secretion than normal, can't empty properly), problems result. This can be a very painful situation when they become infected! If a dog (or cat) is scared or overly excited, these glands can secrete the smelly, oily substance on the surrounding fur, causing bad odor.

I agree and I'm going to keep it that way but I will simply say this. There is no gator mouth bloodline or a Coby. There's is a Colby but if you don't have papers to prove it, odds are someone just said this to sell a pup or because it is what they were told. Not trying to upset anyone just help you learn more about the breed and blood lines. Read this thread, it will help you reconize fake bloodlines Backyard Bloodlines - Pit Bull Forums

Re: Bad smell & excessive gas..?

hello topmodel662, i have no knowledge of the brand you mentioned, maybe others have and will post? just remember with dry food, the moisture is added back to it in the dogs gut ,through drinking water. so only feed half the amount compared to "WET" or moist food. the chicken should be cooked, roast it microwave it, however you prefer, although i woudnt fry it and i wouldnt add any thing to it , this should make up a quater ,to a third of the total meal size with the rest being rice. the overall size of the combined chicken and rice should roughly , if formed into a lump, not exceed the size of the dogs skull. not his skull and muzzle , only the domed shaped skull. in this case however i would reduce that amount even further, but you will have to assess this your self. no bones should be used at all. steamed or boiled fish can also be used. remember to cut chicken into smaller pieces, and do not be tempted to use to much chicken, as this is high in protein all will cause gastric problems. you want make the meal pretty bland but nutritious . i would personally feed them half hour after they have finished work, in the evening time and i would start off with very small amounts.
If your dog is still fouling in your home, this is relatively easy to fix . never tell the animal off ,it will read your dissaproval but not understand it.this will leed to an insecure personality. every time your animal emptys out pick a simple short syllable word ,not a sentence but a word such as "toilet" or whatevers good for you , say it to the animal and praise it, every time you take him to empty out use the same simple word , and again use it and praise him when hes finished. this will leed to the dog emptying out on command. if the animal goes any where in the home lay down paper use the same command as above and direct them towards the paper, make a fuss when they have finished , clean up and relay fresh paper .keep a small piece of the soiled paper and lay it on the fresh paper. the scent will direct them towards it , when they consistantly go in one plaice only , then you can move that plaice out doors using the command and small piece of soiled paper, then when consistently going outside , you will only need the command, and the dog will think he is trying to please you. remember to make a fuss every time they do some thing you want them to do.the drive to please its master is one of the strongest traits of these dogs, so it shouldnt be hard work. now unfortunatly i have to go , cesar milans on the phone begging for my advice...LOL

  10. Re: Bad smell & excessive gas..?

I had the same thing happen to a pup that I acquired years ago. The dog smelled something fierce and it was an infection that he had in his ear that was the culprit. Also, sometimes before they start being wormed, this may happen.

As far as the gas, I had one that had the same problem. He couldn't digest the food properly. I changed the food a few times and finally used Kirkland chicken and rice and fed twice a day and he was fine. Sometimes they develop food allergies which can be difficult to solve.

Clearly you missed the point of my question. I DID read the "baCcyard bloodlines" post. I honestly could care LESS about that. I AM CONCERNED WITH THE FACT THAT THE DOGS SMELL & IT MAY BE A BIGGER ISSUE.

  12. Re: Bad smell & excessive gas..?

TIGERLINES & LAKEWOOD DOGGER, thank you for your response. I truly appreciate it & am going to try all of the mentioned solutions. I am also going to take them to the vet about the anal glands thing bc i have never heard of it, but with the given explanation, it makes sense. Thank you so much!!

yes and u can find it at any central states store or tractor supply,if u have one:D

  16. Re: Bad smell & excessive gas..?

I keep hearing about that store.. they moved the one in my city. I will have to find it. I hear that it is very inexpensive.

Just a thought... could OVERFEEDING be the cause??..I feed them about a cup & a half each, twice a day. But judging by the skull-sized measurements TigerLines mentioned.. it seems to be more than that amount that I am feeding them now... ??

Re: Bad smell & excessive gas..?

why don't u cut the amount down to a cup and a half a day, then increase if needed:D i don't think it's overfeeding, inwhich u are but i think there's a differance between foul smell and poop.if all fails check ur vet

If you're feeding them diamond dog food, it has a scale on the back of the bag that gives age and weight and feeding amounts on it.

Sounds like the dogs anal glands need to be expressed, but take your dog to the vet to see the underlying problem.

    signs of gland problems:

licking or chewing around it's rectum
scooting it's rear across the floor
foul or fishy odor coming from dog's rear
    stools becoming soft

    Hi-Tek Rations: Dog Food

I don't know what line of Hi-Tek you're feeding, but by looking through some of their ingredients, IMO I would rather feed Diamond. Ingredient wise, their Perfectly Natural Dog line looks the best, very similar to Diamonds. Good luck, hopefully you'll find the problem soon. :dogtongue:
