I dont know how long your mill is Buck but by my calculations Caine's belt is 125 inches long and you would need 2 so that would be 20.83 feet of belting so that one roll should give you enough to make belts for 2 mills it being 50ft long

    Buck:

    - 100 inline wheels, I'll get you a quote.

    - Belting, Mextra was on point with the link he posted. However, I ordered 2 x 50ft rolls of the "4 INCH" belting. Not the two inch. If you do the roller beds like mine, then I am almost positive you'll need the 4 INCH roll, because if you use fender washers like I did, then it's a tight fit. But I know I could have bolted the slats to the belt closer to the edge of the belt closer to the center of the slats. Mextra's calculations were right, but I only used one roll so far but am glad I had extra.

NOTE: I'm not sure if I read about the belting here or on the pitbullchat forum, but they did warn about 'rubber' belting (instead of other 'multiple-ply' belting). MY BELT SNAPPED TODAY!!! Luckily it wasn't my boy's stud MAX. I know it was because of the abuse of taking it on and off and adding and taking away slats. Because I've seen a lot of older mills use the same kind of material, and have seen it last a real long while. It really isn't meant to be taken on and off, and stretched and abused. But believe me, when it snaps, it's catastrophic! Especially when a young strong dog is running full stride. I know it's my fault, and I wasn't careful, but I just had to put that warning out there.

If anyone knows about any 'multiple-ply' belting made of rubber/canvas/pvc/etc. please let me/us know.

However, for the prototype/design phase of the mills, the flexco stuff will do just fine.

    Mextra:
    - No pics of the 53mm wheels mounted yet. I should have that by next week if I have the time. I spent most of my free time fixing the snapped belt, and calming down my pup BARRY after the little mishap on the mill.

Sorry to hear you belt snapped . i hope the dog is ok

Try finding some PVC 120 CxC Belting that is what was used on the Ciuros slatmills and from the descriptions its is tough durable stuff and they used Hidden clipper lace to take the belts on and off.

Caine did you ever make another belt ? or switch to the 53mm wheels ?

    Belt:
I finally acquired some used FireHose. However, since it's a 4" diameter hose, it's way too big and thick to use as is. I'm going to have to cut it somehow into a 3" to 4" wide belts. However, I don't know the best way to go about doing that. I want to make it the straightest possible.

    53mm Wheels:
I ran out of bearings to use, and I use the mill that we built everyday so I can't borrow any bearings from those inline wheels. I should have pictures up by late this week or early next week with the 53mm wheels as I should have more bearings soon.

Also my new mill will be built completely out of wood, even the roller bed. The only metal parts are the wheels and screws. I've also switched to 2" x 14" x 3/4" slats. They are shorter and thicker than the ones I have pictures/video of. For some reason they run smoother and seem to be more stable than the other slats.

I should have pictures of the all wood mill up soon.

    Mextra:
Are you in the process of building a mill or do you own one? I'd love to see your process or your mill.

    Thanks

    solid?
    durable?

    Thanks Caine

Right now Im in the planning stages drawing out plans to see if i like one design over another . Also Trying to get a parts suppliers list in order .
I think the hardest part is finding suitable belting material . I tried making a mill years back just didnt have all the right tools to get it done . I do now though , so i figure in the next couple weeks ill be getting started . And all wood Mill hmm like this

    <object height="385" width="480">

    <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LXNzLAMSdAw&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" height="385" width="480"></object>

Should cut down on cost and be very durable I have built aquarium stands with plywood and 2x4 and you can probably sit a car on them lol

Firehose if you can get that cut down think about this Water Pump PVC Discharge Hose 2in. x 50ft. | Discharge + Suction Hoses | Northern Tool + Equipment It lays flat and its PVC so its strong

The all wood mill is very solid and very durable and quieter than the square tube mills (when on a concrete floor). I'd say they're about the same noise level when on carpet or in the house. But the smoothness is unparalleled because I've finally been able to incorporate the racing go kart main wheels and bearings like the 'most expensive' mill on the market. It's REAL SMOOTH. I have a prototype already built, but it's 'ugly' and not worth posting, lol. Also it uses a single row of inline wheels instead of the '53mm' wheels that I've been wanting to use.

I have no experience in working with metal or wood whatsoever. But working with wood, a simple drill press and some tools have been so much easier than the metal, and welding. Nothing beats the durability and look of steel. But for simplicity sake in terms of time and effort, I've been running my dogs real hard on the wood mill prototype with no problems. I'm sure the wood mill is durable enough because Barry is 60lb on the chain and he can run full out on it with the flexco belts every other day with no problems.

For me, the biggest mystery and source of frustration has been the belts. I've got some firehose I'm about to try to use, but if anyone has any more experience or information on exact specs and sources for the belt material, PLEASE SHARE!!! I've looked at a lot of mills but have had trouble looking for that exact reinforced canvas belt that'll do the trick for speed / quiet / smooth / durability wise.

Anyways.... I'll keep you all posted

i have a suggestion but nervous , after you saying you not use to the tools lol,

maybe an exact o knife or a table saw? if your nervous, get some one more qualified then it should be safe! :D, i often though about what i would do , but i though i would just get 2'' wide Flat, think its 1'' 3/4''

As promised, this is the prototype all wood mill that we've been building. Previously it had a single row of inline wheels, and the flexco belt. That held up well for a couple of weeks but I wanted to try some of the newer parts that we got in. I switched out the roller bed for the 53mm wheels that I've been favoring, and finally cut the firehose and made a bellt out of that. Lastly, the slats are also different. They are 2inch wide slats made out of poplar wood. Poplar is no where near as sturdy as oak so I got them 3/4". I've been running it with my dogs with good results and they've been holding up well. I do think that I could have got them a little slimmer, which would reduce the weight and maybe run a little smoother. The way it's set up right now, I can get between 6 and 7 free spins (with the 7th spin always barely making it through). This is just a prototype though and I know I'm having a lot of issues with alignment, leveling, etc. It is what it is though and my dogs have been running it hard. The rubber lined firehose is ridiculously faster and extremely tougher than the flexco rubber, but it's definitely louder. The firehose had two layers. One was the inner layer that was rubber-lined that held the water, plus it had a canvas outer layer. I made another belt with the outer layer that worked o.k. It wasn't as fast, but was a little quieter.

    Mextra:
There u go with the ugly pics, lol. We're currently building another one that looks a lot better, but using more 2x4 than 2x3's.

    Donny:
If you were asking me about having bigger wheels, there really wasn't any point. I was testing the main wheels at that time and just went with whatever worked better. But at the end of the day, absolutely nothing beats quality racing go kart wheels, bearings, axles, and cassettes.

Good luck to all those out there building their own mills. Keep the posts coming. We all learn a little something from each one.

good job, i used 4 wheels, one at each corner pressed up against the sides of the slats to keep mine running striaght,
im also using hinges attached to ea slat to prevent any stretching or accidents from snapping while being used
