Liquid fenbendazole dosing question

I am looking into liquid Safe-Guard (fenbendazole). On one website it said the dosage of the 1000 ml bottle of horse/cattle suspension was 5 ml (cc) per 25 lbs. So a 50 lb dog would get 10 ccs per day x 3 days.

My co-op didn't carry the horse/cattle suspension but instead carried the 100 ml suspension for goats. But on the back of the 100 ml bottle it give the dosage as 1.2 ccs per 50 lbs instead of 10 ccs per 50 lbs. Why the difference? The suspension is the exact same (10% fenbendazole).

Has anyone used either the horse/cattle suspension or the goat suspension? Why would there be such a large difference in dosage with the active ingredient being the exact same?

Any insight anyone could give would be wonderful.

I use the horse/cattle suspension ABK. If you do 3 to 5 consecutive days, it will be effective. If both are 10%, use the dosage you prefer. Either amount is effective and you won't OD a dog with it. It's more important to make sure it's given 3-5 consecutive days.

The difference in doseages is due to the difference in metabolism, digestion, absorption and immune system in both animals.

Personally, I've only had contact with the horse/cattle suspension, I always worked off the labelled doseage and never ever had a problem... as c-murda pointed out, you're working no where near lethal or damaging doseage limits anyway, the importance is to make sure that it is given consecutively as it has a stacking effect. (which still wont bring you close to OD numbers).

Nah, Azium is anti-inflammatory as far as I know. Fenbendazole is a broad spectrum dewormer/parasite medicine. Covers a lot more than most generic dewormers usually cheaper than the "shite" at the vets too... operative word "shite".

We always just had it round coz we ran cattle at my old place so it was cheap and easy :)

So the 1.2 ccs per 50 lbs will be an effective dose? If so, I'd round up to 2 ccs even per 50 lbs 3 days in a row. Is this OK?

Thanks for all the help guys! :)

lol, that's the dosing strategy I used for the paste with my pups. "A little dollop 'ill do ya!" Good to hear the liquid is the same. I was disheartened when I read 10 ccs for a 50 lb dog!

If you just give a dollop how can you really be sure you are giving the correct amount? It is easy for worms to build resistance to this wormer so not only should you be careful in the dose you use but it should not be used on a monthly basis. The dosage is 1cc per 4.4 lbs of body weight given orally 2 times a day (every 12 hrs) for 3 days in a row.

We dose the rescue pups 1cc per 5 lbs for 5 days.
Safeguard liquid is great. It gets whips, tapes and all the other worms as well. Lot of rescue pups have tape and whips so we dose them good with this when we first get them.

well, fecals always come back negative-so i know its working.
the dollop is within a cc or 2. only worm them quarterly

Thank you rally. I was beginning to get confused again! With folks posting conflicting doses I thought I was going to be no better off then when I began! But to make sure, 2ccs per 50 lbs will do the job then? Please forgive my asking again, I am getting so many different answers!

EDIT - Before anyone asks, asking a vet for dosing instructions is out - almost all of our vets here refuse to give advice & they resent you if you self-treat! I even had one vet who I use regularly tell me "well, that's what you get when you give your own shots" after I lost a pup to parvo! And that was AFTER I spent $250 with them trying to save the pup!

I used safeguard many times, the effective dosage i use is 1cc per 10lb of dog, use it 4-5 days straight , should work great.

That is an underdose and is one of the reasons how worms build resistance to drugs. That is the reason the dosages change and medicines change. If you give the right amount you dont have to give it 4-5 days only 3 days. As far as I know the most recent dosage (2008) is 1cc per 4.4 lbs.
